ROLI recently unveiled the Seaboard GRAND, a novel musical instrument developed similarly to the piano keyboard. This futuristic keyboard aims to transform the manner in which music is created. Interested individuals can pre-order the Seaboard GRAND at ROLI’s website.
In a statement, Roland Lamb, founder and CEO of ROLI, said, “After years of development, we are tremendously proud to be offering the Seaboard on sale today. It is a testament to the huge commitment of the ROLI team that such a small group can offer a device so technologically advanced.”
The Seaboard is a drastically novel musical instrument, which will re-imagine the piano keyboard as a soft, continuous wavelike surface. The instrument’s sensual touch will feel innate and extremely human. The Seaboard already has many admirers including noted film composer Hans Zimmer.
Zimmer said, “Having the Seaboard in front of me is inspiring. It has a sensual touch which feels intuitive and very human. The Seaboard shows us how to get beyond the boundaries of the keyboard, a technology that was invented hundreds of years ago. Many people have tried and failed to do this; Roland Lamb and his team are actually much closer than anyone else has ever come to doing so, and thereby establishing a new, truly expressive digital instrument.”
Lamb has developed Seaboard with an aim to widen the expressivity of the keyboard. Lamb has graduated from Harvard University and the Royal College of Art. The Seaboard has already won top honors at the 2013 SXSW (News - Alert) Music Accelerator, held in Austin, Texas. The Seaboard made its first appearance on September 23 at the Royal Albert Hall in front of an audience of 4,000.
The patent-pending SEA Interface technology has been instrumental for the unique soft touch of the Seaboard GRAND. The organization has spent several years in research and testing for developing optimized materials and sensing solutions capable of delivering an exclusive variety of passive haptic feedback, and an information-loaded, high-resolution data stream.
The Seaboard GRAND has merged the finest conventional instrument craft and modern technological design. The instrument measures only 25.7 mm, the thinnest full-size professional keyboard instrument ever developed. Black anodized, precision-milled aluminum has been used for the casing and stand.
