Cloudian Enters into an Agreement with CA Technologies

Cloudian, Inc., a Foster City, Calif.-based software company specializing in cloud storage software, has entered into an agreement with CA (News - Alert) Technologies to bring affordable, powerful data protection to enterprises and managed service providers.

"Our research indicates that backup continues to be a major challenge for IT, and one that is not getting any easier in the era of cloud and big data," said Simon Robinson, research vice president, 451 Research, in a statement.

Robinson said that interest in cloud-based backup approaches is already strong, and the hybrid cloud backup model is emerging as the preferred method of deployment, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

He said that this joint CA-Cloudian solution is a major step toward finding a simple, scalable, and affordable data protection solution that combines backup and disaster recovery.

Officials with Cloudian said that by pairing Cloudian object storage software with CA ARCserve, Cloudian and CA Technologies (News - Alert) are enabling customers to protect their data using commodity hardware instead of tape or proprietary backup appliances, significantly reducing the cost of acquiring and managing backups.

Company officials said that the combined solution empowers IT to back up data to a public, private or hybrid cloud. Hybrid clouds offer additional benefits such as faster backup and restore and disaster recovery. Smaller enterprises can easily re-direct their backup from on-premise to a public cloud.

"IT organizations are looking for backup solutions that automate intelligent execution of file and data movements, while reducing both hard costs and overall impact on the production environment," said Steve Fairbanks, vice president, product delivery, data management, CA Technologies.

Fairbanks said that the cloud-based solution that CA Technologies and Cloudian have brought to market does exactly that.

The combined solution opens up new opportunities for managed service providers to offer backup-as-a-service.

"CA Technologies shares our vision of our world where storage-as-a-utility is a reality, and storage solutions are simple, affordable and powerful," said Giorgio Propersi, general manager, Americas and EMEA, Cloudian.

"Together, we will enable enterprises to rid themselves of their backup worries while bringing MSPs another value-add that they can offer their customers, helping them build their business in a competitive market," said Propersi.
