Comtrend Picks Sigma Designs' CG5200 Family of Chipsets

Advanced networking supplier Comtrend (News - Alert) has selected Sigma Designs’ new CG5200 family of chipsets for its PowerGrid 9051s Powerline Ethernet Adapter.

Comtrend has selected the second-generation chipset for their newest and most advanced powerline adaptor, said Gabi Hilevitz, vice president and general manager for Home Connectivity business unit at Sigma Designs (News - Alert).

The CG5200 was built with considerations around service providers' and consumers' challenges in mind.

Frank Chuang, vice president of marketing at Comtrend, said that Sigma Designs is a strategic partner for Comtrend and the Home Networking product portfolio.

For the distribution of Triple Play (News - Alert) and IPTV over existing in-home powerline, coax and phone line wires, the CG5200 enables a complete self-install home entertainment network.

The CG5200 complies with the latest MIMO standard and improves coverage and throughput over powerline even through surge protected power strips and multiple phases.

"The CG5200 chipset is one of the most technically superior solutions on the market, giving our PowerGrid 9051s the necessary competitive advantage for the demands of video,” Chuand said.

The combination of Comtrend's PowerGrid 9051s with CG5200 is seen as a solution for carrier-grade, self-installable in-home distribution of rich content over a powerline grid.

Company officials said that the PowerGrid 9051s comes pre-configured for plug-and-play home networking.

Moreover, it features high throughput, support for network and device level QoS, advanced encryption algorithms for safeguarding the network integrity and remote management capabilities complying with TR069.

Comtrend is an experienced networking equipment manufacturer, according to Hilevitz, and their selection of the CG5200 family of chipset for the next-generation products is an expression of confidence in Sigma Design's technological leadership in this area.

The CG5200 chipset family includes whole home coverage utilizing all existing wires: coax, phoneline and powerline; optimization for IPTV (News - Alert) and multicast systems for video and audio traffic; support for TR069 remote management and monitoring; guaranteed reliable performance and user experience; and more.

Sigma Designs designs and builds the essential semiconductor technologies that serve as the foundation for the world's leading IPTV set-top boxes, DTV, connected media players, residential gateways, home control systems and more.

Recently, the company announced that it will launch the EasyTV Dongle reference design.
