Spirent (News - Alert) Communications, a provider of solutions for test and measurement, has collaborated with Indiana University’s Software Defined Networking (SDN)/OpenFlow research organization, InCNTRE in order to build an open-source OpenFlow conformance test suite.
With support from Spirent, InCNTRE researchers supposedly developed conformance test suites for OFTest, a Python-based conformance-testing framework, built on Open Networking Foundation’s (ONF) OpenFlow standards.
OFTest begins with the very basics of OpenFlow, but provides a framework for development of more complicated tests and it is used as the primary vehicle for validating OpenFlow. It is also said that parts of OFTest are being adapted and used for standards based compliance testing. And Spirent iTest, an integrated test authoring and execution solution built for testers, developers and automation teams, is designed with the necessary features to deliver automation support for OFTest.
Spirent also developed the Spirent TestCenter OpenFlow test package that delivers the required empirical data to determine if OpenFlow network devices and Software Defined Networking (SDN) applications can deliver business benefits without degrading the user experience.
Aswath Mohan, director of segment marketing, data center, cloud computing and security at Spirent commented, “We are very delighted to be cooperating closely with InCNTRE to promote the testing and adoption of OpenFlow standards using an open source approach. By combining OFTest with Spirent TestCenter OpenFlow, we enable customers to validate the capabilities of OpenFlow and SDN throughout the entire product lifecycle. We look forward to continuing our work with InCNTRE to drive adoption of OpenFlow and further refine testing procedures”.
Matt Davy, executive director of InCNTRE at Indiana University (News - Alert) added, “OpenFlow is an important technology for meeting the demands being placed on today’s networks, and conformance testing is critical to the success of OpenFlow in the marketplace. We are pleased to collaborate with Spirent on developing OFTest to ensure it can be used to validate that Ethernet switches conform to the OpenFlow standard.
Spirent asserted that the newly developed conformance test suite should help in its efforts to drive the adoption and acceleration of SDN and OpenFlow.
