AMD Unveils APP SDK 2.8 and Unified Developer Tool Suite

Providing developers the tools and resources required to improve applications with AMD (News - Alert) accelerated processing units (APU) and graphics processing units (GPU), AMD has announced AMD APP SDK 2.8 and the AMD CodeXL unified tool suite.

AMD APP technology facilitates the operation of AMD graphics processing cores (GPU), and works with the system’s x86 cores (CPU). This executes heterogeneously to accelerate many applications beyond just graphics.

This in turn facilitates better balanced platforms that can run difficult computing tasks quicker than ever.

Also, software developers can optimize for AMD Accelerated Processing Units (APU).

To make use of the processing power of heterogeneous compute with OpenCL, C++, DirectCompute and more, the APP SDK 2.8 and CodeXL tool suite offers access to code samples, white papers, libraries and numerous other useful tools. Offering considerably quicker performance than APP SDK 2.7, APP SDK 2.8 includes dozens of new and improved samples for OpenCL, Aparapi and C++ AMP.

“With CodeXL and APP SDK 2.8, our highest performing SDK to date which leaps past the competition in performance on standard benchmarks, AMD continues to empower developers with the resources they need for greater performance and power-efficient applications," said Manju Hegde, corporate vice president, Heterogeneous Applications and Developer Solutions, AMD. "From today's ultraportable mobile solutions to the highest performing supercomputers, our latest tools and solutions help developers more easily leverage the power of heterogeneous computing and take greater advantage of the compute capabilities.”

Recently, the company shut down its Germany-based operating system research center (OSRC) to reduce costs. This research center was used to develop Linux kernels optimized for AMD microprocessors. The Dresden center was established in April 2006 to assist in bringing the global AMD processor design community with the OS development community.

The forum also played an important role in ensuring that the next-gen AMD solutions supported Linux.
