Verizon Provides Security Tips to Retailers this Holiday Season

Verizon (News - Alert) has come up with a holiday security checklist for retailers who are looking to sell their products online this holiday season. The company believes that these tips will help them secure point-of-sale online and mobile systems.

The tips start with an advice on compliance. Verizon suggests that retailers maintain current compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards. (PCI (News - Alert)-DSS). It will be easier now because top-tier merchants are allowed to assess themselves against the PCI standards.

If the retailers are thinking of going for a third party security, they should only go for reliable and well known vendors. Apart from this, educating employees and helping them recognize security breaches will help them in keeping the measures active, the report stated.

Apart from all of the methods mentioned above, retailers should make sure that online and mobility channels are safe to use. One of the methods to do this is to frequently change administrative passwords on all point-of-sale systems and implementing firewalls, the report stated.

“We know from Verizon's 'Data Breach Investigations Report' that retailers -- which benefit from the lion's share of consumer spending over the holidays -- are among the most vulnerable to cybercrime and theft," said Scott Eason, vice president of retail and financial services for Verizon Enterprise Solutions.  "Taking stock of vulnerabilities and putting some simple practices in place will help retailers protect their customers and assets.”

Recently, the company released another report where it stated that technology trends for 2013 will be mostly about increasing productivity and enhancing the customer experience. The company stated that distributed data centers and the intelligent wired and mobile networks that connect them now reflect an affordable alternative to conventional virtual private network (VPN) methods. According to the company, these methods have been introduced as the backbone of distributed enterprise communications for a generation.
