Drobo Ships Drobo Mini and Drobo 5D

Award-winning data storage products maker Drobo announced that its new products the Drobo Mini and the Drobo 5D are now generally available and have been shipped. The Drobo Mini and Drobo 5D products rapidly accelerate workflows by using high performance SSDs seamlessly and intelligently with HDDs.

The Drobo Mini and Drobo 5D products are the industry’s first to embrace USB 3.0, the automated tiering that supports SSDs and high-speed Thunderbolt connectivity. They have enhanced reliability features and true storage-array portability. The accelerated workflow will be a boon for creative professionals managing rich-media catalogues and also for Mac enthusiasts who need portable, fast and high-capacity storage.

They are the most modern storage arrays that work and create large amounts of rich media. Power users of Adobe and Apple (News - Alert) applications including Photoshop, Premier Pro, Aperture, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro will find Drobo Mini and Drobo 5D ideal for backing and storing up all types of files. Home media enthusiasts who want to consolidate and accelerate storage, videos, music, and photo files Drobo Mini and Drobo 5D both have a plug and play accelerated storage option that can also run rich media libraries like iPhoto and iTunes. The data can also be safely stored and backed up.

Tom Buiocchi, the chief executive officer of Drobo, said that with the Drobo Mini and 5D, they were adding speed to Drobo's well-known ease-of-use. He added that they were the industry's first storage arrays that automatically and affordably mix and match high-speed SSDs, HDDs and Thunderbolt support. Tom also went on to add that they created these products with the needs of creative professionals and Mac enthusiasts in mind.

Drobo 5D is designed to be the desktop workhorse for media creators and other professionals. Drobo 5D makes protecting and storing valuable data very simple. It has storage capacity for more than 650 Blu-ray discs, 90,000 16 Megapixel raw photos and up to 5,000 hours of 1080p HD video.

Drobo Mini is compact and powerful, designed for mobile professionals. Drobo Mini accommodates an SSD Accelerator Bay, a USB 3.0 port, four 2.5-inch drives and two Thunderbolt ports in a small package, small enough to fit in a portable travel bag. Fully loaded with drives installed, the product weighs about three pounds. Drobo Mini can hold up to 3TB of usable and protected data, which is enough to accommodate data protection for about 1,000 hours of HD video and about 15,000 raw photos.

Customers can add SSD technology to the new Drobos for about $100 and increase transactional performance by up to 12 times over previous models of Drobo.
