Tesla Motors Selects OmniVision's OV10630 Camera

OmniVision Technologies (News - Alert), Inc. (OVTI), a developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, recently announced that Tesla Motors (TSLA) has selected its OV10630 image to support its rear-view camera system in Model S.

The OV10630 combines megapixel resolution with color HDR (News - Alert) in a 1/2.7-inch optical format. The AEC-Q100 qualified OV10630 comes with a full set of automatic controls and an image processing pipeline for display and sensing applications. Ideally suited for wide field of view and multi-camera applications, the OV10630 incorporates special features and output formats for automotive machine vision applications. With its proprietary capability to simultaneously deliver high image quality and superior scene information, the OV10630 is designed for automotive applications that perform vision and sensing functions concurrently.

"OmniVision's OV10630 delivers extremely high performance on a single chip," said Satish Jeyachandran, senior manager, hardware development at Tesla Motors. "Its ability to provide high quality HD video allowed us to design and integrate the industry's first HD camera into our 17-inch infotainment system. The quality and field-of-view of the images provide Model S drivers an unparalleled driving experience even in challenging lighting conditions."

The sensors are built on a 4.2-micron OmniPixel3-HS pixel, enabling best-in-class low-light sensitivity of 3.65 V/lux-sec to capture detail-rich, high-definition color video in any environment. Using a proprietary new high dynamic range (HDR) concept and processing technology, these automotive sensors deliver excellent scene reproduction in the most demanding lighting conditions, achieving a dynamic range up to 115 dB in color and black-and-white.

"Driven by both anticipated legal/regulatory requirements and consumer demand, rear-view cameras and other vision- and sensing-based driver assist systems are experiencing high adoption rates in next-generation  vehicle designs around the world," said Inayat Khajasha, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision. "The OV10630 is our flagship sensor, designed to meet the stringent requirements of this rapidly growing market. We believe that the selection of this sensor by a leading-edge manufacturer like Tesla Motors underscores our leadership role in shaping the future of automotive imaging."
