During the survey, more than 100,000 community members were polled to gain a better understanding of issues surrounding open source cloud deployments – its advantages and disadvantages – and also to gauge future open cloud deployment opportunities within IT departments.
More than 600 IT professionals, which also included system administrators and architects, developers, network engineers and CIOs, were a part of the Zenoss survey.
"There has been a flurry of activity surrounding the state and adoption of open source cloud deployments,” said Floyd Strimling, VP of Community and Technical Evangelist at Zenoss. “While much of the open cloud excitement has been centered on the newly launched OpenStack Foundation, the vast majority of our survey respondents have not yet deployed a solution. The survey indicates there is a three-horse race between OpenStack, CloudStack and Eucalyptus, with many challenges needing to be solved before full open source cloud adoption will take place."
Findings of the survey revealed new opportunities for open source cloud deployment, even though current sentiment surrounding open source cloud technology benefits is not very positive. The survey also revealed that 82.9 percent of respondents were currently not using an open cloud with 38.5 percent citing lack of maturity as their reason, while 30.7 percent said lack of support was hampering their adoption of the technology.
Approximately 28.9 percent of respondents said security concerns were stopping them from adopting open source cloud.
The survey also found that 62.8 percent of respondents keen on adopting open cloud were considering OpenStack, while 46.8 percent sought CloudStack, and 23.8 percent were looking at Eucalyptus.
The future of Open Cloud is bright based on the fact that 56.9 percent of respondents were considering deploying an open source cloud in the future, while 41.6 percent of the respondents said they expected to do so in the coming year or two.
