To organizations, this integration provides a single platform for the centralized management of distributed virtual services at a lower total cost of ownership, according to company officials.
John Martin, senior vice president of product management at Riverbed, said that with this new solution, enterprises can deploy servers in the data center but execute at the edge, which will enable them to quickly create complete virtual data centers, simplify management and provisioning while also extending those same benefits to branch offices.
The combination of the integrated solution with the Granite edge virtual server infrastructure (edge-VSI) allows organizations to leverage the investments they’ve made in the data center and extend control and policy boundaries to the edge of the network.
This approach reduces the cost of operation since it centralizes and streamlines the management of virtual services and data.
Moreover, it delivers services wherever and whenever needed without compromising performance.
VMware vSphere is a virtualization platform for building cloud infrastructures, while the Riverbed Steelhead EX series is a specialized product line focused on the needs of active branch offices. Riverbed is now enhancing the virtual services platform (VSP) featured on Steelhead EX appliances via a new integration of VMware vSphere 5.
IT teams are seeking solutions that enable the centralization of data with local execution, with Steelhead EX appliances running VMware vSphere and Granite deliver, according to company officials. In addition, it also provides a pathway for full virtualization and the realization of the software defined data center.
Via integration, the applications and services needed in branch offices can now be operated and managed on the virtual server solution, directly on a Steelhead wide area network (WAN) optimization appliance. Additionally, leveraging the Granite edge-VSI solution, organizations can now consolidate and manage VMware vSphere-based virtual servers in the data center, yet boot and use required services across a WAN over distance.
With this new integration and support, organizations can instantly provision branch services and storage for increased agility, high availability and improved disaster recovery (DR).
Additionally, Riverbed announced that it is introducing hardware appliance models and software enhancements to its industry-leading Riverbed Steelhead product family.
