A forum consisting of investors, data center operators and outsourcing enterprises have planned to meet and explore why Finland is gaining precedence as a suitable location for establishing major international data center operations.
Participants will be meeting at Kajaani in Finland on October 25, 2012. Meeting on-site at the Kajaani location in central Finland, the forum will look into factors that are necessary to develop new regions so that they can deliver data center operations optimally.
Forum attendees will study the advantages that the Kainuu location has to offer for data center facilities. They will also examine how a modern modular data center is being built and operated.
They are expected to learn how existing industrial infrastructure can be modified to match modern data center requirements, which will offer significant cost savings.
“These are exciting times. By applying the same systematic analysis utilized by the nuclear power industry, Finland is setting new benchmarks that will reflect reductions in CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert),” said Carl Wideman, FDI and IT Services Sector, Business Development Director at Invest in Kainuu.
“By recognizing what global data center giants now understand about the superior infrastructure often found in the Nordics and applying it across the rest of the industry, the region is shifting the focus of data center efficiency from infrastructure to internal technical proficiency,” Wideman added.
Forum members will get to explore the capabilities available in Kajaani and the surrounding region. The region’s environmental credentials, commercial and technical features can also be studied.
Expert speakers like Henna Virkkunen, minister of public administration and local government in Finland, and Michalis Grigoratos, Technical Working Group, The Green Grid (News - Alert) of EMEA lead energy and sustainability management, will share their perspective on the development of a profitable data center.
“Data center location is receiving much wider consideration than previously,” commented Warwick Dunkley, vice president at BroadGroup, the forum researchers and organizers. “Where enterprises are focused on assuring long term renewable power resources, with international connectivity, Finland offers an outstanding location with many other advantages.”
Recently, technical computer provider SGI announced that Finland’s CSC (News - Alert) IT Center for Science Ltd. has selected SGI ICE Cube modular data center technology for a new green data center in Kajaani, Northern Finland.
