BANSEA & NUS Enterprise to Hold Social Venture Pitching Day

Despite being a relatively new concept, social venturing has been attracting enterprises, investors and passionate market entrants across the globe. With an aim to promote the phenomenon, social venturing events are being regularly held at various venues.

Business Angel Network Southeast Asia, or ‘BANSEA’, and NUS Enterprise have announced to jointly hold a Social Venture Pitching Day on July 27th, where social enterprises will have a chance to reveal their profitable business ideas and raise funds for making investment in hopes to convert these ideas into successful business ventures.

Founded in 2001 by a group of Singapore-based angel investors, BANSEA has established network connections to angel groups in China, India, Malaysia and Thailand, as well as close links to groups in Europe and the U.S. Its members have investment experience spanning multiple sectors and a track record in building successful companies. The organization holds around 10–12 events a year for its members to meet and listen to short pitches by start-ups shortlisted by the Screening Committee.

Similarly, NUS Enterprise offers an entrepreneurial and innovative dimension to the core research and educational activities of the National University of Singapore, or NUS. The organization works at boosting the entrepreneurial spirit, partnering for success and nurturing future entrepreneurial leaders to make an overall positive impact on Singapore’s economy and beyond. NUS Enterprise emphasizes on working in three key areas, which are experiential education, industry engagement and partnerships, and entrepreneurship support.

The event will take place in Singapore, and Professor Wong Poh Kam, director of NUS Entrepreneurship Center and board director of BANSEA, will offer his valuable views through an opening address on social entrepreneurship and investment in social ventures. Afterwards, a number of social enterprises will demonstrate start-up pitches clearly describing their mission and vision. Further, evaluations will be held and the event will end with a networking session.

Some of the companies that are going to be present for pitching at the Social Venture Pitching Day 2012 are Bridge Learning, BagoSphere, Oceanic (News - Alert) Gold and Saught.

Bridge Learning offers low cost diagnostic learning and specialized intervention for children with learning difficulties or disabilities, while BagoSphere develops specialized training programs for rural youths belonging to the lowest social and economic strata. Similarly, Oceanic Gold emphasizes launching sustainable rural enterprises in ASEAN countries for bringing about holistic positive changes within the entire village ecosystem; and Saught uses scrap metal of war remnants to generate new products and boost sustainable development in post-conflict nations.

In June 2012, Singapore hosted CommunicAsia (News - Alert) 2012 and EnterpriseIT 2012, a four-day communications and info-tech event that featured the latest technology developments from approximately 2,000 exhibitors and thought leadership of 200 expert speakers from over 100 countries and regions.
