Wind River Maintains Leadership in Traditional RTOS Market

VDC Research Group has recognized Wind River (News - Alert) as the continued real-time operating system (RTOS) and embedded Linux market leader in its 2012 "Embedded/Real-Time Operating Systems" report.

This report covers the global market for commercially available RTOS’s and non-real-time operating systems, as well as other related bundled products and services used in embedded applications.

VDC Research Group (News - Alert) has applauded Wind River for maintaining its longstanding position as the traditional RTOS market leader for its portfolio of products and services, led by its VxWorks RTOS.

The report also recognizes Wind River, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel (News - Alert) and a global specialist in embedded and mobile software, as the embedded Linux market leader for its Wind River Linux platform and related solutions, for the fourth consecutive year.

"As one of the few vendors that offer both RTOS and Linux, Wind River's leadership can also be attributed to offering a wide range of products and services used to optimize device development across multiple industries and applications," said Jared Weiner, analyst at VDC Research Group.

According to the report, Wind River achieved about 40 percent of total market revenue for global shipments of traditional RTOS’s and related services in 2011.

It attained more than 50 percent of total market revenue for global shipments of Linux and related services, and Wind River's percent of total market revenue was double that of the closest competitor in both RTOS and Linux categories.

"Recognition as a perennial embedded industry leader underscores the compelling value of Wind River's products and services that our customers rely on and is a reflection of our technology heritage and expertise that spans more than 30 years," said Ken Klein, president of Wind River.

Wind River was in the news earlier this year for announcing enhancements to its VxWorks safety solutions, including safe and secure partitioning via the upcoming version of Wind River Hypervisor, the company's high-performance embedded hypervisor.
