University of New Mexico Selects HP Networking Solutions

The University of New Mexico (UNM) has selected HP to improve its network infrastructure performance and flexibility. The university will make use of HP Networking solutions for this purpose.

HP delivers innovative networking solutions to help organizations improve their time-to-value, operational excellence and ability to leverage networking technologies. The combined product portfolio of ProCurve, 3Com (News - Alert), H3C and TippingPoint expands HP's networking capabilities and accelerates the Converged Infrastructure strategy.

By providing students and faculty with secure, high-performing connectivity, HP networking solutions are enabling UNM to keep pace with campus expansion. They are part of HP’s Converged Infrastructure portfolio, which integrates data center technologies into pools. Supporting several 2011 NCAA Final Four playoff games, UNM now relies on HP network technology for video displays and digital signage throughout The Pit.

“With more than 32,000 students, 20,000 employees and a dozen remote campus locations state-wide, it is crucial that we generate the best performance and value from our technology investments,” said Mark Reynolds, interim director, information technology, UNM. “HP solutions enabled us to upgrade to next-generation network standards, better support campus growth and reduce total cost of ownership over the previous solution.”

The university extended a competitive bidding process to five vendors as the end of life for its existing network switches approached. Looking to achieve increased performance, single-pane-of-glass management and reduced total cost of ownership, UNM selected HP networking solutions, including the HP E4800 switch and the HP Intelligent Management Center network management platform.

Without network downtime during the upgrade, the HP Intelligent Management Center integrated UNM’s existing multivendor network environment, said the company.

Recently, the company entered into collaboration with a South Africa-based nongovernmental organization, mothers2mothers (m2m), to deploy its expert technology to help prevent transmission of HIV. The current paper-based patient record system will be replaced by a new database technology with the inclusion of cloud and mobile services by HP. The m2m network, with its 700 sites in sub-Saharan Africa, can make use of the new management system to easily share information.
