I plucked three of today’s hottest Information Technology stories from the headlines to feature in a recap. Here you have them:
Smartphones Making Other Gadgets Obsolete
And finally… recent research shows that the recent influx of smartphones and other Web-enabled mobile devices has made a number of once-popular gadgets nearly obsolete.
GPS navigation systems, netbooks and portable music players have all taken a major hit in the last year as consumers have started gravitating toward newer, more multi-dimensional devices. This decline, which is expected to continue, is partially due to the fact that today's 12-megapixel smartphone cameras are comparable to some of the market's lower-end digital cameras.
According to research, the top smartphone cameras are built into the iPhone 4, the HTC Evo 4G, the Motorola (News - Alert) Droid X and the Nokia N8.
Facebook Releases Statement about E-Mail Product
Facebook’s e-mail isn’t really e-mail. That is the story, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg (News - Alert). In fact, the new messaging system unveiled this week is a slightly different version of e-mail.
Andrew Bosworth, director of engineering for Facebook (News - Alert), refers to the new system as IM with e-mail layered in. The three components: seamless messaging; conversation history; and social inbox.
With seamless messaging, you can easily be reached anytime and anywhere, though e-mail, SMS or IM. The conversation history allows all conversations to be in one long stream that can be kept for eternity. The social inbox allows you to filter based on your friends through options such as messages, other and spam.
