Exar Unveils Enhanced Version of BitWackr

Exar Corporation, a company specializing in silicon, software and subsystem solutions for industrial, datacom and storage applications, unveiled the latest version of BitWackr for Windows and Linux.

The latest version, BitWackr 2.1, is said to offer scalability to over 250TB and provide a developmental shortcut to incorporate data deduplication, compression and/or encryption features in their products.

"Exar's (News - Alert) data reduction and security processors are the heart of all BitWackr products and provide the advanced CPU offload required to reduce latency and enable in-line data reduction and encryption without a performance penalty," Bob Farkaly, director of marketing and storage systems for Exar, said in a statement.

Farkaly also clarified that BitWackr-enabled volumes incorporate an end-to-end data integrity capability that operates throughout the data lifecycle. In the case of unexpected downtime, he said, BitWackr can reconstruct volumes within minutes of the interruption, allowing enhanced data recovery, serviceability and fault resilience.

Exar's BitWackr is said to incorporate specialized ultra-low latency hardware that provides a distinct deduplication and compression performance advantage and enables primary storage advanced data reduction techniques to operate in-line with little or no performance impact. BitWackr is a developmental shortcut to the incorporation of advanced data reduction into primary and nearline storage products.

Exar's Virtual Block Device (VBD) technology allows BitWackr to remain transparent to applications, operating systems, file systems and volume managers enabling OEMs to incorporate BitWackr and offer a comprehensive suite of data reduction features. BitWackr 2.1 uses PCIe hardware acceleration technologies.

For almost 40 years, Exar has been serving the industry with its product portfolio that includes power management and interface components, communications products, storage optimization solutions, network security and applied service processors. Company statement also revealed that the new BitWackr 2.1 will be made available with immediate effect for evaluation and incorporation into OEM products and solution offerings.
