Kontron Unveils AdvancedMC Packet Processor Module

Kontron (News - Alert), a provider of embedded computer technology or “ECT” solutions, announced the release of its AdvancedMC (News - Alert) or “AMC” packet processor module based on Cavium Networks Octeon II CN6335 MIPS64 6-core processor.

“We are extremely proud to have worked with Cavium Networks to design this unique AMC module,” said Marc Leclaire, product manager for AMC, MicroTCA (News - Alert), ATCA switch at Kontron, in a statement.

The new AMC module offers increased functionality and exceptional performance for any number of 4G applications. It is also a cost-effective solution that is in line with the COTS ecosystem business model for ATCA, MicroTCA and other implementations taking advantage of AMCs, Leclaire added. 

The AMC packet module is designed for 4G network equipment vendors seeking a time to deploy, using standards based hardware platforms such as AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) and MicroTCA, company officials said.

Kontron’s AMC packet processor module AM4211 can be used as an eNodeB and Long Term Evolution or “LTE” network element component. Else, it can be used with full-scale AdvancedTCA blades, as a co-processor NIC (News - Alert).

AM4211 module is scalable across both MicroTCA (Picostation, Microstation to Macrostation) and 14-slot AdvancedTCA platforms, Kontron officials said.

Kontron AM4211 packet processor modules featuring CN6335 processor support 1x 10GbE to the front and software configurable interfaces to the fabric with either 2x PCIe x4 or SRIO, company officials said. This feature expands its application usage when configuring systems in combination with standards based third-party digital signal processing AMCs.

Kontron AM4211 also delivers the best performance per watt compared to other multicore processors. The low latency 3G DPI performance capabilities, combined with unlimited rules and a feature-set on a single chip that includes integrated security, enables telecom equipment manufacturers or “TEMs” to use it for a broad range of applications at the core, edge and access network elements.

Earlier in September Kontron announced that its Computer-on-Modules and Panel PCs support the new industrial-grade Intel Atom processor E6xx series, TMCnet reported.

Based on E6xx series, these solutions enable customers to benefit from lower energy consumption, reduced material costs for the entire system, and overall improved performance, the report said.
