Google Expected to Introduce Two-Step Verification Solution

Google (News - Alert) today is expected to come out with a two-step verification security solution. The effort reportedly is aimed at addressing cloud computing requirements by making remote access as secure as on-site access.

The offer reportedly is aimed initially at Google Apps Premiere, Government, and Education edition users. Word has it that Google will also make this sign-on process available to all its users in the not too distant future.

Google users will get an SMS message or voice call on their mobile phones with a login verification code. However, users of Android (News - Alert)-based and BlackBerry handsets (and, soon, iPhones) also will have the option to use the Google Authenticator application to generate a login verification code.

According to reports, Google will make its code for this solution open source, enabling third parties to leverage it for various enterprise security applications.

In a report issued today, research firm Gartner (News - Alert) Inc. says by the end of 2013 location information or profile information from mobile phones will be used to validate 90 percent of mobile transactions. The firm goes on to say that the rapid adoption of smartphones is forcing banks, social networks and other e-commerce providers to implement the kinds of fraud detection capabilities that have become mainstream with fixed-line computing.

"Because of the improving browser experiences on smartphones, mobile commerce and transaction execution are set to increase rapidly," says William Clark, research vice president at Gartner. "We estimate that by the end of 2013, 12.5 percent of all e-commerce transactions will be mobile."

He goes on to say that fraud detection tools available today that work in fixed-line computing environments don't work well or at all in the mobile world.

Avivah Litan, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, says the evolution of these fraud detection tools will play a part in turning mobile commerce into location- and context-aware commerce by increasing the confidence of businesses, financial institutions and end users.
