Kong Sees Fast Growth in the UK as Organisations Shift to Microservices Architectures

SAN FRANCISCO, July 23, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Kong Inc., the leading API and service lifecycle management platform for modern architectures, today announced that Depop, Just Eat and Karhoo, fast-growing startups based in London, have selected Kong Enterprise to power their core business applications and accelerate application development as they shift to a microservices architecture. The companies needed a modern API platform that is scalable, lightweight, fast and provides comprehensive API management capabilities.

Depop, the popular peer-to-peer social shopping app with over 14 million users, turned to Kong when it was relaunching its mobile application, which is powered entirely by APIs. The app runs in Docker and Kubernetes on Amazon Web Services and is composed of more than 60 microservices. After evaluating a variety of solutions in side-by-side performance testing, Depop chose Kong Enterprise due to its superior performance, ability to scale and best overall feature set. Because Kong Enterprise is container-ready, it could be used right out of the box, unlike other solutions that had a much more complex implementation. Next, Depp plans to use Kong Enterprise for its website and to manage its internal APIs as well.

Just Eat operates a leading global hybrid marketplace for online food delivery. From an ambitious crew of 15 in a Copenhagen basement in 2001, to a team of more than 3,600 people today, Just Eat is now a global brand, delivering delicious food experiences to over 26 million active customers from more than 100,000 restaurants in 13 countries around the world. With Kong, the company has been able to establish a standard mechanism for on-boarding new restaurant partners as well as standardising the design and management of its APIs, easily integrating into CI/CD pipelines - providing the performance, scale and flexibility required to support Just Eat on its mission to serve the world's greatest menu, brilliantly.

Karhoo provides a mobility marketplace by bringing together licensed fleets with global travel operators to create smarter mobility solutions for travellers and citizens. Its platform provides simple integration options (API/SDK/whitelabel) allowing partners to natively offer e-hailing and pre-booking into their applications and online channels. Facing scalability challenges, the developer team made a complete transition to microservices, adopting Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes and Docker. Now running 120 microservices, Karhoo selected Kong Enterprise to automate the development process, and to measure, manage and secure its APIs.

"Kong is helping hundreds of companies across the globe make the complex transition to microservices-driven architectures, and to keep their applications up and running at peak performance," said Augusto Marietti, CEO and co-founder of Kong. "We are excited to welcome Depop, Just Eat and Karhoo to the Kong Enterprise community and help them drive real business impact through software innovation."

Built on Kong's core open source technology, Kong Enterprise is an end-to-end service control platform that enables organisations to effectively secure, connect and orchestrate their APIs and services. It is designed for the modern era of software development, seamlessly connecting APIs and microservices across cloud-native, hybrid and on-prem environments. Kong is seeing fast adoption of its enterprise platform in the United Kingdom from companies across industries, including e-commerce, financial services, on-demand services and travel/hospitality to name a few.
