When Google talks, people listen; or at least they should if they want to ensure they are maximizing the opportunity for online success. Google has spoken, quite frequently, about the importance of speed as it relates to customer satisfaction and the overall user experience. That is something you should be aware of not only to stay in Google's good graces but also to provide a great experience for your customers. Today New York web design company, Lounge Lizard, discusses 6 things Google wants you to do for a faster website.

  1. Increase server response time. First things first, look to increase your server response time to speed up your website. According to Google the server response time should always be below 200ms. If you aren't clocking that speed, then you need to figure out what is holding you back. Another important thing to remember is that your site will be used by older devices including older generation mobile devices and desktops hampered by slow internet speeds. So, while 200ms is a great starting point, reducing server response time even more will ensure that all customers enjoy a fast site load.
  2. Use compression. Compression is an extremely valuable tool for any website because when you reduce (compress) the size of content then it increases page rendering speed along with shotening download time and data usage. Google recommends that you Gzip all content that is compressible. It is also important to audit your site carefully and simply remove all unnecessary site resources and data. Many sites suffer from bloat simply because they haven't taken the time to trim the fat which not only allows a better focus on the meat but also increases site speed, specially when combined with compression.
  3. Utilize browser caching. The more trips needed between the client and server means the slower a site loads along with costing clients more data. By using a browser caching policy, you can allow the client to reuse responses from the past rather than taking another trip. The policy should clearly define if a resource can be cached, who can cache it, how long it will remain cached, and how it can be revalidated when the policy expires.
  4. Optimize all images. This is something everyone should be doing, and yet many don't. Images are typically the biggest data hog on any website and optimization is an easy way to reduce file size, decrease bloat, and increase load speeds without sacrificing the visual image. For sites that utilize numerous images, taking the time to perform a more in-depth optimization including using vector formats, removing metadata, enhancing img tags, or leveraging CSS3 to replace images when applicable.
  5. Never use landing page redirects. Page redirects slow down the overall site experience, especially on mobile devices because each redirect adds and extra request-response action which must travel roundtrip. This delays the site from rendering quickly. In some cases, it can trigger additional roundtrips for DNS lookup, TCP, and TLS interaction. Google recommends a maximum of one redirect from a URL to the final landing page along with sites being designed using a responsive model.
  6. Improve CSS delivery. Google recommends that you inline small CSS directly into the HTML document to remove small external CSS resources. This is important because pages need to process CSS before they render. When the CSS is bloated or overloaded then it can take multiple roundtrips to the server before the page can begin to render.
