1 in 5 Organizations Lack Cybersecurity Incident Response Plan

A flash poll conducted by Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) indicates nearly 20 percent of respondents know their organization does not have an established incident response plan in place to address a cyber breach.

"In today's environment, there are two types of organizations - those that have been breached and are aware, and those that have been breached but are not yet aware," Tom Wojcinski, principal with Baker Tilly's risk, internal audit and cybersecurity practice, said. "Leading organizations will operate under the assumption they are insecure, and strategically plan for the inevitability of a breach by developing plans and implementing processes that reduce the number of usable attack vectors."

"In cyberspace, attackers can hold an advantage over organizations that do not rigorously test their defenses," Ken Zoline, manager with Baker Tilly's risk, internal audit and cybersecurity practice, said. "Organizations should proactively perform cyberattack simulations and rhearse incident breach response procedures to help manage and defend their attack surface."

Baker Tilly recently held an educational webinar, "Using cybersecurity attack and breach simulations to manage your organization's attack surface," discussing how organizations can test their cyberattack prevention, detection and response capabilities through cyberattack and cyber breach simulations.

The webinar presenters discussed:

  1. The difference between cybersecurity attack simulation, vulnerability scanning, vulnerability assessments, penetration testing and continuous monitoring.
  2. How to plan and conduct a cybersecurity attack simulation.
  3. The difference between incident response and breach response planning and testing.
  4. How to plan and conduct a cybersecurity breach simulation.
