IEEE Power & Energy Society and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to Collaborate on Advancing Electricity Systems

IEEE (News - Alert), the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, or in Spanish, the Ministerio de Electricidad y Energía Renovable del Ecuador (MEER), have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement is intended to more effectively align efforts to meet grid reliability and resiliency challenges due to significant changes in the supply, transfer, and demand of energy, as well as to evaluate, advance and implement energy technology in step with globally accepted parameters.

The MOU identifies four cooperative areas for greater coordination and engagement: Grid Reliability and Resilience, Ancillary Services, Electric System Efficiency and Application of Technology. IEEE PES will consult with other divisions of IEEE as needed, and collaborate on the development of a joint implementation plan with MEER to achieve identifiable objectives reached under the agreement.

"Engagement with IEEE PES is a logical step for MEER, both for the benefit it can bring to power generation and T&D systems in Ecuador, but also in drawing upon the technical expertise in the country that can lend to the development of globally accepted standards and shared technical developments that can benefit society as a whole," said MEER Minister, Medardo Cadena. "Our commitment to a formal agreement solidifies our relationship with IEEE PES and opens the door to its vast repository of resources and information available today, as well as setting the stage for greater collaboration and the ongoing development of useful resources advancing power technologies."

"In formalizing this agreement with MEER, IEEE PES establishes a strong commitment with the Ecuadorian government to work together towards building the most resilient and reliable electricity systems in the region, particularly in a changing environment of increased reliability and resiliency needs and integation of distributed energy resources and electrical storage," said Damir Novosel of IEEE, who spearheaded the collaboration. "Weighing the challenges of such things as infrastructure management, safety, and security, this MOU comes at an important time to have IEEE experts from Ecuador and worldwide help ensure optimal solutions for power systems in Ecuador. We look forward to our ongoing cooperation with MEER."

Through this MOU both IEEE PES and MEER have expressed a mutual interest in mobilizing the technical community to facilitate dialogue that leads to the coordination of activities and the implementation of effective strategies for Ecuador. This formal collaboration follows on from the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Latin America conference held September 2017 in Quito, Ecuador that MEER was involved in. Covering a range of topics including smart grid advancements, international best practices for the integration of T&D systems and insightful Latin America case studies, the conference attracted participation from practicing engineers and more than 300 attendees from all over the region.
