JEDEC and SNIA Win Best of Show Award For NVDIMM-N Standard at Flash Memory Summit

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and JEDEC Solid State Technology Association were honored yesterday evening at the Flash Memory Summit conference with a Best of Show Award in the Most Innovative Flash Memory Technology category. The award recognized the DDR4 NVDIMM-N Design Standard, and was presented to Jeff Chang of AgigA Tech and Arthur Sainio of SMART Modular Technologies, Co-Chairs of the SNIA NVDIMM Special Interest Group and Jonathan Hinkle of Lenovo (News - Alert), Chair of the JEDEC Hybrid DIMM Task Group and a member of the JEDEC Board of Directors, at a reception and awards ceremony at the conference, which is held annually in Santa Clara, CA (News - Alert).

The JESD248 DDR4 NVDIMM-N Design Standard now enables datacenter systems to design for standardized, compatible persistent memory. NVDIMM-N's are dramatically boosting performance for next generation storage platforms systems by providing high-speed access to persistent memory. This has been a game-changer, allowing the ecosystem to now broaden and provide a solid platform for firmware, operating system, and application developers to start reaping the orders of magnitude performance gains available. Published by JEDEC, the JESD248 DDR4 NVDIMM-N Design Standard is available for free download from theĀ JEDEC website.

JEDEC's JC-45 Committeefor DRAM Modules and the NVDIMM Special Interest Group (SIG), a subcommittee of the Solid State Storage Initiative within SNIA, collaborated on the development of the NVDIMM taxonomy, of which NVDIMM-N is one version. Non-Volatile DIMMs are hybrid DDR4 memory modules that plug into standard dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets and appear like a DDR4 SDRAM to the system controller, yet contain non-volatile (NV) memories such as NAND Flash on the module. The NVDIMM-N version combines DRAM and NAND Flash where the Flash memory provides backup and restore of all DRAM for reliable data persistence through power failure.

"JEDEC is honored to receive this prestigious award in partnership with SNIA," said Mian Quddus, Chairman of JEDEC's JC-45 Committee for Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) Modules. He added, "This recognition illustrates how effective collaboration between standards organizations provides innovative solutions to the industry and helps accelerate market adoption of new technologies."

"SNIA's commitment to the advancement of persistent memory technologies is enhanced by our JEDEC partnership," said Jim Pappas, SNIA Vice Chairman and Co-Chair of the SNIA Solid State Storage Initiative. "We are grateful for industry recognition of how joint technical activities can advance the delivery of persistent memory solutions to today's customers."

"New hybrid storage solutions are emerging with innovative next generation types of storage class memory that can accelerate performance," said Jay Kramer, Chairman of the Awards Program and President of Network Storage Advisors Inc. "We are proud to select SNIA and JEDEC for the Best of Show Innovation Award for their innovation in creating the DDR4 NVDIMM-N Design Standard as an industry standard that enables NAND flash and NVDIMM technologies to be combined in a way that enables compatibility among vendors and seamless implementations of the latest memory and storage technology."
