CALIENT Integrates with Evertz to Deliver Protocol Agnostic Fiber Connectivity for HD and 4K UHD Content Production Applications

CALIENT Technologies, Inc., the global leader for optical circuit switching technology, today announced that Evertz Microsystems has integrated CALIENT's S-Series Optical Circuit Switches (OCS) with its MAGNUM Controller. The integration adds the protocol agnostic fiber-optic connectivity of the S-Series Optical Circuit Switches to production networks managed by MAGNUM.

Broadcasters and content providers that are adopting new fiber-rich ultra-high definition (UHD) technology are faced with the need to manage masses of fiber and to share and simplify access to high value camera control units and media servers that are connected using a range of different network protocols including 3G/6G/12G serial digital interface (SDI) and Internet protocol (IP).

The CALIENT-Evertz (News - Alert) integration allows production facilities that use MAGNUM for facility management and control to add the protocol transparency and very low power of pure optical layer switching delivered by CALIENT's high capacity OCS systems. This allows facility operators to reconfigure optical layer connectivity in the studio or production van on demand and to effectively share high-value resources such as camera control units.

A key benefit of CALIENT's S-Series switches in production environments is the ability to manage fiber-cable intensive environments consisting of hundreds or thousands of single mode optical fibers. Existing workflow management procedures require technicians to manually re-patch connections between events, adding cost and impacting reliability. The optical circuit switch can be thought of as a very fast and highly reliable automated optical patch panel that required only initial connection and setup, with all subsequent reconfiguration handled remotely via MAGNUM.

Evertz is the leader in software defined video networking (SDVN). The company's MAGNUM Controller lets content providers and developers move from legacy SDI connectivity to Internet protocol (IP) in a seamless manner while having access to ll media server resources. The MAGNUM Controller is designed for Evertz 10/100GE high capacity switch fabrics, media IP gateways, and Evertz' traditional SDI products such as EQX 3G/HD/SD-SDI routers.

CALIENT's S-Series Switches includes the S320, a 320-port OCS, and the S-160, a 160-port OCS. The switches allow any-to-any all-optical network connections at any speed up to 100Gbps and beyond. The switch offers very low latency and can be reconfigured on demand through network management or via multiple open APIs.

"The transition to fiber-based UHD networks is adding complexity to broadcast production environments. But with CALIENT's OCS, facility managers can dramatically simplify their connectivity and improve ROI by automating fiber management and sharing high-value production resources," said David Altstaetter, CALIENT Vice President of Marketing and Product Line Management. "The integration with Evertz' MAGNUM brings together two market leaders to deliver a new flexible and high-performance solution to the market."

"CALIENT's ability to automate the physical switching of optical fiber brings a new layer of value to broadcast production facilities as they deploy large volumes of fiber," said Mo Goyal, EVERTZ Director of Product Marketing. "Integration of this capability with MAGNUM represents a logical next step to facilitate full end to end management for studio operators."

About CALIENT Technologies

CALIENT Technologies is the global leader in pure photonic Optical Circuit Switching with systems that enable dynamic optical layer optimization in next generation data centers and software defined networks. CALIENT's 3D MEMS switches allow data center operators to dramatically improve utilization rates of expensive compute resources which typically account for 75% to 90% of investment. Data center operators and metro service providers also deploy CALIENT switches at the edges of their networks to facilitate multi-layer network optimization for maximum efficiency and flexibility. In this application the optical circuit switches support network-wide implementation of SD-WAN regardless of the vendor or vintage of the optical transport system. The company designs and manufactures its systems using the state of art MEMS fabrication equipment at its corporate headquarters in Santa Barbara, California.
