Iris Recognition Growth Expected in Smartphones, Tablets and Other Applications

NEWARK, Calif., Aug. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta ID Inc., a leader in consumer iris recognition technology, reports OEM market adoption of iris technology is rapidly rising with new launches of smartphones and tablets including iris recognition. Delta ID also found in a recent survey conducted with Macromill of Japan that consumers prefer the experience of using their iris to unlock their devices.

OEM Launches
Fujitsu and NTT DOCOMO launched the world's first iris-enabled smartphone, arrows NX F-04G, with Delta ID's ActiveIRIS technology, in May of 2015. It was quickly followed by arrows NX F-02G launch in the fall of 2015. The world's first 10-inch tablet with iris recognition technology, arrows NX F-04H, started selling in Japan last week.

Several major OEMs have incorporated iris technology in their mobile devices, Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL, Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris SM-T116IR, and HP Elite X3. Samsung's tablet is the world's first tablet compatible with India's UIDAI and enables a host of applications in government, enterprise and consumer sectors. HP Elite X3 is the world's first smartphone with both fingerprint and iris biometrics technology.

Survey Results on the Use of Iris Recognition
In a recent consumer satisfaction survey by Macromill of Japan, users were asked to share their experience of using biometric unlock in their smartphones. Only iris and fingerprint enabled smartphones were consiered from Fujitsu, Sony, Sharp, Samsung and Apple. The survey included several hundred users and found that:

  • The number of consumers using biometric unlock was 50% higher for iris-enabled smartphones than fingerprint-enabled smartphones
  • 90% of the users of iris unlock were satisfied with the functionality
  • Speed and accuracy of iris unlock were the most appealing aspects

"We are thrilled to see consumers enjoying the convenience of Look to Unlock® their smartphones, make payments, and get access to secure applications," said Salil Prabhakar, president and CEO of Delta ID. "We are seeing continued increase in excitement around this technology amongst all major smartphone manufacturers, and we soon expect this technology to be adopted in other areas that need convenience and security such as in tablets, banking and even in cars in the future."

The iris, the thin circular structure in the human eye which controls the size of the pupil and gives the eye its color, also contains a rich intricate pattern that is unique to each eye. Iris recognition is widely accepted as a more secure and reliable biometric modality to identify and authenticate people. Iris recognition works well for people across broader age groups and occupations, with higher security than other biometric modalities.

With its patented ActiveIRIS technology, Delta ID has made remarkable advances in bringing iris recognition to mass market consumer mobile devices. Delta ID's ActiveIRIS technology is fast, secure, reliable, and easy to use. With ActiveIRIS technology integrated in a smartphone or a tablet, users have the convenience of just looking at their device to unlock it and log into various applications and websites, without compromising security. Users no longer need to remember or type passwords.
