New Policy Engine Lends Greater Flexibility and Control to Internap's MIRO ControllerATLANTA, July 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Internap Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP), a provider of high-performance Internet infrastructure services, today announced a new Policy Engine feature for its Managed Internet Route OptimizerTM (MIRO) Controller. The Policy Engine provides network engineers with granular routing control, empowering each individual application with its own traffic policies that emphasize network performance, cost-efficiency, or any combination of both. MIRO Controller enhances and improves Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), allowing enterprises and service providers to optimize their critical applications by continuously monitoring multi-carrier networks for latency, packet loss, route stability, congestion and cost and dynamically routing traffic over the best path. The new Policy Engine feature enables organizations to identify applications and protocols within their networks and treat those with a granular control not possible with standard BGP. Network operators can now customize routing policies based on application, protocol/port number, IP address or Autonomous System Number (ASN). "As demand increases for intelligent traffic routing, network engineers are seeking out more granular control over not only the types of prefixes but also the applications that are being prioritized," said Steve Orchard, senior vice president and general manager of data center and network services at Internap. "Some organizations, such as VoIP or online game providers, may need to optimize performance at all times when it comes to the delivery of their critical applications, while their less critical applications, such as email, can instead take the most cost-effective available path. With its new Policy Engine, MIRO Controller now delivers this level of highly specialized customization and control." Any organization deploying a multi-homed network is likely to be running multiple applications, each with its own unique set of performance needs. MIRO Controller's new Policy Engine now enables those organizations to customize and accommodate each application individually. Organizations can use the Policy Engine's cost-only option to ensure traffic for non-critical, back-office applications will only take specific cost-optimizing routes, significantly lowering bandwidth costs. Meanwhile, for critical applications requiring maximum performance, organizations can create and deploy a performance-only policy, which identifies and uses the best-performing paths available. This is often ideal for VoIP, gaming and media streaming applications. Backed by more than 15 patents, MIRO Controller uses the same powerful, carrier-class software that underpins Internap's terabit/second Performance IPTM connectivity, which optimizes traffic for its cloud and data center customers across 80 network access points and 15 data centers worldwide. Unlike other solutions, which optimize traffic every few hours, MIRO Controller optimizes network routes every 90 seconds and is capable of making up to 1 million path adjustments per hour, resulting in fastest-path routing more than 99% of the time. MIRO Controller supports IPv4 and IPv6 and includes an advanced reporting GUI, which provides unprecedented insight into network performance, network cost and detailed traffic reporting.
