Environmental Sustainability Management - The Next Boom

HYDERABAD, India, July 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Environment sustainability, Green Economy and Green Business are the key buzzwords today across the world across and every corporate, Government and public body, locality associations whether rural or urban have started some green initiative. These initiatives have outgrown their initial 'voluntary', 'social' or 'CSR' mould and have today become mainstream. All businesses have acknowledged that their survival is dependent on how well they embrace and comply with environmentally sustainable business, processes and ideas. To implement these programs there is a great need for trained management professionals with good knowledge of the techniques, techno-commercial aspects and the legal framework.

There are many institutions in India that impart knowledge in environmental science and engineering but there are hardly any business schools offering a comprehensive management course. EPTRI, a purely environment protection and sustainability focused training and research institute located in the vicinity of Hyderabad's financial district and academic capital - Gachibowli, has started a specialized management course addressing this particular need.

We all play our tiny part to protect our environment - recycling waste, using cloth bags instead of plastic, switching off unused lights, carpooling etc. Is this enough? The World is facing a number of environmental concerns such as eroded soils, polluted water, degrading forests and extinct species.

India's remarkable economic growth has been clouded by a degrading physical environment and growing scarcity of natural resources. There is now greater public awareness and an unprecedented demand for sound management of natural resources including air, water, forests, and biodiversity. Environmental sustainability is rapidly emerging as the next major development and policy challenge for the country. This trend is quite visible in the Government initiatives like Swachh Bharath, Haritha Haram.

Besides the Government, many corporates are coming forward with sustainable practices. A few of them are:

  • Industries are using water recycling processes and sewage treatment facilities to cut down their dependence on fresh water.
  • Many IT companies like Infosys are committing to become carbon neutral. Lot of them have joined RE100 - a platform that assists and enables use of 100% renewable energy
  • Corporates are committing and working towards the goal of 'Zero waste to Landfill'
  • Corporates are coming up with environmental responsibility reports/sustainability reports annually along with their annual reports
  • Some IT companies like TCS have suites of environmental sustainability software solutions being offered to its global clientele

The initiatives mentioned above are neither isolated cases nor are they 'early adopters of a trend'. Globally, businesses and the industry have already acknowledged that it is hard for any business leader today to ignore environmental sustanability. In fact, the latest UN Global Compact-Accenture CEO study found that 97% of the 1,000 CEOs interviewed across 103 countries and 27 industries see environmental sustainability as important to the success of their business. Effective and responsible leaders are those who are able to integrate sustainability throughout all aspects of their business and strategy. But these leaders who are capable to lead this initiative are few and far. Corporates are finding it very difficult to locate and recruit these leaders.

This is where business schools can play a critical role to help develop these leaders. These are leaders who are capable of thinking beyond the short-term economic objectives and are ambitious enough to take on the world's biggest challenges such as climate change, extreme poverty and income inequality. The focus of these schools should be

  • To teach them how to synergistically manage the social and environmental contexts in combination with economics
  • How to value, understand and be accountable for, their businesses' financial as well as non-financial performance

But sustainability management is still at a nascent stage and the businesses themselves are experimenting with strategies to develop a business model around environmental sustainability. While there aren't any readymade and comprehensive sets of best practices, it is possible to make a meaningful beginning in this area by experienced institutions with a mix of practical industry interface along with academic capability to create and impart a good business management program. Such a program can integrate best business management skills and techniques with environment management knowledge.

EPTRI one such Government institute has felt the need and capability to launch a two-year PGDM program in Environment Management. This institute holds an international position as the Southern hub for World Bank for solar rooftop implementation, a nodal agency for climate change etc. This institution has a unique set of credentials comprising academic, training and industry experiences. It offers comprehensive services to private, public and government institutions in the fields of environmental sustainability, climate change and bio-diversity.

With this background EPTRI is launching the first-of-its kind comprehensive Post Graduate Diploma in Management- Environmental Management approved by AICTE. This program is designed to mould successful business leaders who abide by the three pillars of sustainable business: people, profit and planet. The course makes a difference to the community by providing socially and environmentally responsible leaders. Students will be trained to steer businesses with environmentally specific cutting edge niche knowledge, knowhow and skills.

Graduates of this progressive PGDM program will fit into policy making, public and private enterprises nationally and internationally. Students will have the advantage of a rare combination of academics, active research and real life environmental problem solving assignments which EPTRI as an institution is already catering to. The institution has unmatched experienced faculty and instrumentation. The institute also provides assistance for bank loan tie-ups and placements.

Corporates in every sector are looking for these trained environment leaders:

  • Consulting firms need them for their EMP/EIA studies for their clients
  • Banks require these experts in their credit department to evaluate projects from the environment angle before sanctioning loans
  • Technology companies need these experts to build Suites for Corporates with sustainability goals
  • Environment Health and Safety (EHS) Managers are integral part of every Corporate
  • Renewable energy sector is integral part of environmental sustainability and require these experts
  • Every manufacturing unit requires an environmental expert during construction and maintenance of the plant
  • With emerging preference for green goods and services, every company aspires to be a green company and is recruiting experts to fulfil its aspiration

With major international commitments towards environment sustainability in the next five years, this subject is bound to become the next boom. EPTRI's PGDM is designed to prepare, train and provide this talent required to handle this boom.
