Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center completes recruitment for pediatric migraine study using Curelator Headache

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Curelator Inc. announced today that it is collaborating with the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in an IRB-approved study to examine the individual factors that may determine the onset of a migraine attack.

This is an Individual Trigger Map for a 16-year-old female patient participating in the Curelator Headache pediatric migraine study. "From using Curelator," she said, "I learned that boredom is a factor that causes headaches and being angry, not just crying but feeling angry at people caused headaches."

This is the first pediatric study to place a digital tool, Curelator Headache, in the hands of children, adolescents and young adults with the goal of helping them identify the symptoms and factors that precede their migraines. Thestudy has completed its goal of enrolling 60 subjects ages 8-21.

Dr. Andrew Hershey, MD, PhD, FAHS, Endowed Chair of Neurology, Director, Headache Center, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and principal investigator for the study, explains, "This study will begin to identify the unique factors that precede a migraine in children and adolescents and how these can be modifiable. This has the potential to greatly enhance the understanding of migraine initiation and allow children to modulate these factors."

Curelator Headache is easily accessed on a smartphone (currently iPhone or iPad only). A novel "Visual Migraine Language (VML)" replaces a traditional text-driven interface with a series of pictorial symbols. VML reduces the time required for daily data entry to 2-3 minutes and increases compliance, especially among children. After tracking a pre-set list of emotional, dietary, physical and even environmental factors for 45 to 90 days (depending on frequency of migraines), patients receive their personalized results in the form of Individual Trigger, Protector and No Association Maps™.  After Curelator Headache delivers their maps, patients can experiment with changing their triggers and protectors and measuring the impact on their condition. The maps are dynamic; they reflect each individual's continuously changing circumstances.

Alec Mian, PhD, CEO and founder of Curelator Inc, observes, "A surprising 10% of children are affected by migraines. We hope that Curelator Headache will empower them with individualized knowledge that they can use to improve their condition at an early age. We are very pleased to be doing this study at the largest pediatric headache center in the world."
