Tom Bergman, program manager in Battelle Memorial Institute's Cyber Innovations Unit, said these insidious devices endanger every aspect of society and can infiltrate supply chains unnoticed. Targets include, among others, medical devices, automotive systems and driverless vehicles.

"The people who are counterfeiting and cloning devices are not going to go away," said Bergman, whose organization is an event sponsor. "The best hope we have is to continue to develop technology that stays a step ahead."

Protecting suppliers and key areas of the economy will be highlighted at the IEEE International Symposium on Technologies for Homeland Security (HST '16) in the Boston suburb of Waltham, Mass., on 10-12 May. www.ieee-hst.org.

Battelle is doing "everything we can do to protect our country and our people from the threat of these counterfeit and cloned devices," Bergman said.

Bergman made his comments n the ScienceNews Radio Network program Promise of Tomorrow with Colonel Mason. www.PromiseOfTomorrow.biz.
