Intertrust and Bitmovin Announce New Digital Distribution Platform

Intertrust Technologies Corporation, a provider of trusted computing products and services, and Bitmovin Inc., a video encoding service for adaptive streaming, today announced a joint solution to seamlessly handle digital content workflow that includes content encoding, protection and rendering on any device. The solution integrates Intertrust's ExpressPlay Multi-DRM (Digital Rights Management) system with Bitmovin's content encoding service. Intertrust and Bitmovin will demonstrate the solution at the NAB 2016 Show, Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Intertrust Booth SU10002CM and at the Bitmovin Booth SU11402CM.

The strategic partnership offers service providers a fully integrated, and easy-to-use, digital video distribution platform that seamlessly targets multiple devices. Bitmovin customers will now be able to take advantage of ExpressPlay's single service API for obtaining DRM tokens for Apple's FairPlay, Google's Widevine, Microsoft's (News - Alert) PlayReady and standards-based Marlin DRM. ExpressPlay customers will have access to an end-to-end solution that includes content encoding, packaging and content rendering on multiple devices. In addition, through its HTML5-based video player, Bitmovin will enable protected MPEG-DASH and SAMPLE-HLS (for Apple (News - Alert) FairPlay) adaptive streaming to be rendered on regular web browsers where the digital rights are granted from ExpressPlay.

"With ExpressPlay Multi-DRM, you can use Bitmovin encoding to support Widevine (News - Alert) Modular DRM and PlayReady in parallel," said Christopher Mueller, CTO of Bitmovin. "By integrating ExpressPlay Multi-DRM, we get access to additional DRM technologies such as Marlin, while our customers get the maximum flexibility in terms of DRM and format."

"By integrating the ExpressPlay Multi-DRM system with Bitmovin's content encoding, service providers get an easy way to integrate a complete solution to distribute protected content to their customers," said Guido Cugi, Intertrust's lead technologist for EMEA. "The combined solution allows service providers to encode and package their content using MPEG-DASH with Common Encryption (CENC) for Widevine Modular, PlayReady and Marlin. We selected Bitmovin because of the seamless integration with the Bitmovin API that allows anyone to setup an HEVC encoding workflow in just minutes."

Bitmovin enables HTML5 adaptive streaming with MPEG-DASH and takes advantage of the Encryption Media Extension (EME) to support DRM in a browser, removing the need for a Flash plugin. As a result of the native integration with the browser, it is possible to play back high resolution formats, such as 4K, and high frame rates, such as 60 fps, that are not possible with Flash.

Bitmovin's MPEG DASH HEVC encoding can be tested for free with 2.5 GB encoding output per month.

The ExpressPlay platform is backed by Intertrust, the inventor of DRM. Using ExpressPlay, service providers can support multiple formats and devices without lengthy product development cycles.

Adopters can get ExpressPlay via a one-stop web form that provides access to all DRM formats.
