GainSpan, OmniVision, and Microsemi Announce Low-Power, Streaming-Enabled Audio and Video Reference Design for Smart HomesSAN JOSE, Calif., April 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- GainSpan Corporation, in collaboration with OmniVision Technologies and Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), today introduced the GS-ADK-Video+FD-Audio reference design, a low-power, battery-operated reference design capable of streaming high definition (HD) video and two-way, telephony quality audio over Wi-Fi networks. The GS-ADK-Video+FD-Audio platform was developed in response to the rapidly growing IoT market for audio and video streaming products in smart homes, and is designed to help speed up customers' time-to-market by reducing product development costs and cycle times. Through this collaboration, customers benefit from each company's leadership in their respective fields: OmniVision's low-power video processor solutions; Microsemi's advanced audio analytics algorithms; and GainSpan's expertise in low-power, cloud-connected Wi-Fi solutions. The highly optimized IoT video and audio platform is the trio's first reference design collaboration, and sets a new standard for real-time, interactive imaging experience in home IoT products such as smart video doorbells, battery-operated cameras and baby monitors. The platform features OmniVision's ultra-compact and power-efficient OV788 video processor, Microsemi's Timberwolf™ ZL38051 advanced audio processor, and GainSpan's GS2011M low-power Wi-Fi module. Combined with GainSpan's embedded streaming software application, the platform delivers crisp 720p (1280x720) HD video at 30 frames per second (FPS) and high quality, two-way audio with acoustic echo cancellation and noise reduction over Wi-Fi networks. The GS-ADK-Video+FD-Audio Application Developer's Kit (ADK) is available through GainSpan and its distributors. The ADK targets connected video and audio streaming applications over Wi-Fi networks, allowing these applications to interface seamlessly with smartphones that use the iOS or Android operating systems. The ADK, which comprises hardware, a complete software development suite, and sophisticated mobile demo applications, gives engineers the ability to quickly add video and audio streaming capabilities to their IoT products, thereby reducing development costs and accelerating time to market. OmniVision's high performance video processors and CameraChip™ image sensors are central components in the IoT solution. The OV788 is an ultra low-power video processor with a built-in image signal processor (ISP) that works seamlessly with OmniVision image sensors, such as the OV9712 that is featured as a part of this ADK. "With the explosive growth of IoT applications in today's market, we see an ever-increasing demand for integrated wireless multimedia solutions that reduce manufacturing costs and time without sacrificing quality," said Kalairaja Chinnaveerappan, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision. "This reference design combines the expertise of GainSpan, OmniVision and Microsemi in a high quality solution tailored for wireless, battery-operated IoT applications such as IP cameras, smart video doorbells and smart home locks." The platform's advanced audio capabilities are enable by Microsemi's Timberwolf ZL38051 audio processor. These capabilities include wideband acoustic echo canceller designed to provide excellent echo cancellation, noise reduction, beam forming and sound location detection for the increasingly demanding Internet protocol (IP) camera and wearable markets. "This cooperative collaboration between GainSpan, OmniVision and Microsemi sets a new standard for delivering leading-edge technology to IP camera manufacturers," said Shahin Sadeghi, director of marketing at Microsemi. "The attributes that each company brings to this project complement each other perfectly, and combine in this platform to provide an excellent solution for our customers in the IoT sector." "GainSpan is thrilled to partner with OmniVision and Microsemi to deliver a best-in-class, low-power wireless video and audio platform," says Richard Najarian, GainSpan senior director, solutions marketing. "Video-based product manufacturers can now leverage the platform's integration advantages to add sophisticated audio and video features while reducing product development times."
