Comparing to the previous year the number of powerful attacks has increased by 5%, the number of extremely powerful ones has increased by 4 times.

Average attack power has reached 1.37 Gbps and increased by 1.5 times as compared to 2014. The most powerful attack reached 242 Gbps. This attack is 36% more powerful than the most powerful one conducted in 2014. As for TCP/SYN packets attacks, the most powerful attack of 2015 reached 47.3 packets per second. This attack is 16% less powerful than the most powerful one of 2014. However according to DDoS-GUARD experts this fact doesn't mean that general volumetric attack level has decreased. The average value of 6,500 packets per second has increased by 3% as compared to the previous year.

Percentage ofattacks by protocol type:

  • TCP - 32.3%
  • UDP - 27.8%
  • Others - 39.9%

Country Rankings

The most of attack traffic has come from China: 43%. The US took second place: 29%. Russia came in third: 28%. (The statistical data is based on the average number of attacks aimed at 1,000 resources of each country named above)

Thus, the undisputed leader in this ranking during 5 years of DDoS-GUARD's experience in DDoS mitigation remained China. Russia swapped places with Canada, which ranked third in 2014. It is worth noting that DDoS-GUARD serves a large number of customers not only from the three countries mentioned, but also from Europe, South America and Asia, so the ranking can be considered as worldwide.

General Trends

Short-lasting UDP flood is becoming more powerful. But realizing that the flood does not pass through the filters of DDoS protection, hackers start looking for new ways to block the victim's resource, using outdated and little-known Internet protocols to create parasitic traffic flow, as well as combining long-lasting attacks of average power with super-short bursts.
