Longtime Database Thought Leader Mike Carey Joins Couchbase as Consulting Chief Architect

Couchbase, Inc. today announced that University of California, Irvine Professor of Information and Computer Sciences Mike Carey has joined the company as a consulting chief architect. Mike is commencing a sabbatical from the University of California, Irvine, during which time he will join the Couchbase engineering leadership as a consultant focused on the database for the next generation data model.

"Mike is a genuine thought leader in the database space, with a deep understanding of the issues from an academic perspective, as well as a proven track record in creating products that address market needs. We share a vision for the architecture of next-generation database management systems, and his work on AsterixDB - a big data management system more than three years in development - is complementary to the design of Couchbase Server," said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president of engineering and products, Couchbase. "The addition of Mike to the Couchbase team will accelerate the delivery of further innovations and significantly extend our lead in NoSQL and multi-model database software."

Carey has been recognized as a leading academic in the field of data management and distributed computing design for more than 30 years. He is currently professor of information and computer sciences at University of Californi, Irvine. Prior to rejoining academia in 2008, he worked at BEA (News - Alert) Systems as chief architect and an engineering director for the BEA AquaLogic Data Services Platform team. Carey also spent a number of years as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as a database researcher and manager at IBM (News - Alert) Almaden and as a fellow at e-commerce software startup Propel Software. Carey is an ACM fellow, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a recipient of the ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award. His current research interests are centered around data-intensive computing and scalable data management.

"I am extremely impressed by Couchbase Server. The architecture and distributed design are far ahead of what other NoSQL vendors have done," said Carey. "In the coming 4.0 release, Couchbase is delivering a product that, for the first time, makes it possible to query distributed data with the power of a traditional database - regardless of where the data sits. This could change the entire NoSQL and relational database industry."
