American Osteopathic Association Taps Pediatrician and Educator to Lead Accreditation of Osteopathic Medical Schools


The American Osteopathic Association named Alissa P. Craft, DO vice president of accreditation and secretary of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).

AOA is the professional membership, accreditation and advocacy organization for the nation's more than 110,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and medical students, who train in all physician specialties. COCA accredits the nation's 30 colleges of osteopathic medicine currently offering instruction at 42 campuses in 29 states.

Dr. Craft is a board-certified pediatrician and neonatologist who became a COCA commissioner in 2012. She previously served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Old Westbury, New York.

"Dr. Craft is uniquely qualified for this critical position, which helps to shape the quality of medical education in this country. As a physician, educator, and prior voting member of COCA, she is committed to ensuring the highest quality education for our future physicians and clearly appreciates the benefitsof osteopathic focused training in today's health care environment," said Adrienne White-Faines, AOA CEO. A highly experienced physician and educator, Dr. Craft was instrumental in the launch of the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest in Lebanon, Oregon, where she served as vice chair of pediatrics and director of curricular outcomes and assessment.

She holds a BS from Arizona State University, MBA from University of Phoenix and received an osteopathic medical degree from the A. T. Still University -Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. She completed an internship and residency at Phoenix Children's Hospital and Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and completed a Neonatal Fellowship at the University of California-San Diego.
