Japanese Independent Retailer Chain Uses Qlik to Analyze Customer Sales Data

Qlik® (NASDAQ: QLIK), a leader in visual analytics, today announced that Japanese voluntary independent retailer chain, Zen-Nippon Shokuhin Co., Ltd. (Zennisshoku) has implemented QlikView® to analyze point of sales (POS) system data with help from partner K.K. Ashisuto.

Zennisshoku, the headquarters of Japan's largest voluntary independent retailer chain, provides products to more than 1,800 merchants to manage department merchandise, store operations, and management support. Zennisshoku also provides POS equipment and ordering machines.

To better serve its customer base Zennisshoku launched a frequent shoppers' program that taps into the purchase history of each customer. Through this program, when the customer presents the Zennisshoku membership card at a retail store they can receive automatic discounts or are awarded points at the cash register. The service is currently deployed to 1.5 million customers across 550 nationwide stores.

Data from the frequent shoppers' program is not only used by retail stores, but also shared with manufacturers for direct marketing purposes such as conducting surveys for developing new products. Previously, the data was provided to the manufacturers in CSV file forma, which was difficult for users to access and analyze. Therefore, Zennisshoku wanted to provide the POS data via a visual analytics platform instead of just sharing the raw data.

After thorough research and thoughtful consideration, as well as a careful comparison of costs, system requirements, response and ease of use, QlikView was selected to become the standard BI platform. Key considerations of the Qlik solution include its:

  • Robust platform that helps users take full advantage of the vast amount of big data obtained from membership card and receipt data.
  • Associative data model which enables users to explore data freely uncovering insights around receipt data, customer purchasing behavior and simultaneous purchases, such as the commodity trend of food industry.
  • Ease of use and speed to insight, allowing users to analyze data daily so they can immediately detect any changes in customer behavior and take action.
  • Robust security features that adjust to meet individual users' needs and requirements for public external users.
  • Real-time data analysis to facilitate the planning of joint product development and marketing plan development with the manufacturers.

"QlikView has enabled us not only to analyze our own data, but to share that data in an interactive and actionable way with our manufacturers," said Akira Onda, Corporate Deputy Director, Division President, Information System Division, Zennisshoku. "Users were thrilled by the efficiency they were able to achieve and many found that QlikView carried out analyses in just a few minutes that previously would have taken more than half a day."

Zennisshoku worked closely with Qlik partner, Ashisuto to develop the QlikView user interface, as well as conduct performance testing and improve the support for the program. To date, the visual analytics platform has been shared with major food manufacturers at more than 60 companies. With QlikView, each manufacturer can leverage the guided analytics experience for high-quality analysis on their own, without relying on data scientists.
