SSH Communications Security Welcomes Microsoft Announcement of Support for Secure Shell Protocol

HELSINKI and WALTHAM, Mass., June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ever since SSH founder Tatu Ylonen invented Secure Shell (SSH) 20 years ago, it has become the de facto standard for secure remote operations for both privileged users and machine-to-machine access. SSH Communications Security today applauds Microsoft for its announcement that the company will support Secure Shell in its PowerShell tool and contribute to the OpenSSH project. The move to support Secure Shell will help to ensure:

  • Wider use of the preferred industry standard for key management. Secure Shell has become the tool of choice for IT system administrators to secure remote access to their networks. The need for comprehensive Secure Shell key management and privileged access auditing in enterprise environments has never been greater and will continue to grow with this announcement.
  • A robust, secure enterprise solution. Microsoft's move will not only make Secure Shell client native on Windows but will make Secure Shell server native as well. The combination of PowerShell and Secure Shell will deliver a proven and secure solution to automate and remotely manage Linux and Windows systems out of the box.
  • Support for open source. The PowerShell team will work closely with global subject matter experts to deliver this solution and will support and contribute to the OpenSSH community, and deploy native updates of the code to Windows systems.

Sami Pippuri, director of product marketing, SSH Communications Security, said:
"We're excited about the potential these new capabilities bring to Windows customers and about being able to work together with Microsoft on the greater Secure Shell ecosystem. We also welcome Microsoft to test for interoperability with our extensive set of clients and servers, including mainframe z/OS."
