GEICO urges policyholders to prepare now for this hurricane season

For six months every year, coastal communities hold their breath and hope for a quiet hurricane season. While weather experts have predicted a below-average forecast, it only takes one hurricane to cause widespread devastation, and GEICO recommends being prepared early and above all resist being complacent.

To help kick off National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 24-30, GEICO has some tips to help you and your family get ready and stay safe:

  • Know and practice your evacuation zone. Map out your route in advance and follow official instructions on the TV or radio in the event of a hurricane.
  • Perform a home inventory. Not only will an inventory help speed up claims and substantiate losses, but it will help ensure that you have purchased adequate insurance. The Insurance Information Institute's Know Your Stuff® mobile app is free and easy-to-use.
  • Make sure you have the right insurance coverage. Most homeowners policies don't include flood insurance.
  • Make your home more hurricane resistant. Shutters, trimmed trees, filled holes and secure roofing all improve your home's resistance to damage from high winds and water damage.
  • Have your important documents, medications and supplies together and ready to go on short notice. Plan out everything you will need to take with you including identification, important documents, medicines, water and pet supplies.
  • Keep an eye on developing storm systems and projected storm surge maps. This year, the National Weather Service's NHC will issue Potential Storm Surge Flooding Graphics to show the extent and depth of storm surge for each storm. Updated frequently, these new maps can help you assess your risk and prepare accordingly.
  • Don't wait until the last minute. Complacency can be dangerous. Heed official instructions and don't get caught in the storm.
