HELSINKI, April 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- TrademarkNow®, a Helsinki-based legal technology startup, today announced that Chief Scientist, Anna Ronkainen, who is currently teaching a course on legal technology and innovation at the University of Turku in Finland, will be traveling from TrademarkNow's Helsinki headquarters for a U.S. West Coast speaking tour to lead discussions on the transformative impact of technology on the law.

Ronkainen's US West Coast Tour begins at the 137th annual meeting of the International Trademark Association (INTA) in San Diego, CA, May 2-7, 2015, where she will moderate a Table Topic discussion entitled, "Could your next colleague be a computer?" (TT08). In this discussion, attendees will consider the increasing relevance and impact of intelligent technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning on the field of trademark law. The global economic slowdown in 2008 fundamentally altered corporate law with clients demanding more efficiencies and return on their spending for legal counsel. With those pressures, many legal software startups have launched to offer lawyers solutions to reduce or eliminate current low-level manual legal work. Ronkainen will lead an open exploration of these trends through this Table Topic discussion.

Ronkainen's U.S. West Coast speaking tour continues, following the INTA annual meeting, with a guest lecture on May 7th at The Program For Legal Tech and Design, based at Stanford University's Institute of Design (d.school). The program is led by an interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of human-centred design, technology and law to build a new generation of legal products & services, and Ronkainen's lecture will be a part of the "Introduction to Legal Design" course, which is the first of its kind in the world.

The speaking tour concludes on June 12th at the 15th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence & Law (ICAIL 2015) at the University of San Diego, where Ronkainen will lead a CLE session entitled, "Software Tools, Automation, and Machine Learning for Practice IPLaw."

"While it's amusing to consider a world where robot lawyers manage cases and go to court, a more realistic view is to consider the way artificial intelligence and machine learning can help solve the day-to-day problems of lawyers. As more intelligent technology solutions enter the legal landscape and more pressure is placed on lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel to be more efficient in their practice, the desire to understand how to leverage these solutions is greater than ever before," Ronkainen said. "This is reflected not only in current CLE course topics, conference agendas and media coverage, but also in the academic courses being offered today. Law school professors – and students – are becoming more and more interested in how these technologies will impact the environment and practice of future lawyers. I'll be discussing these trends in my upcoming lectures and discussions in the U.S."

In addition to Ronkainen moderating the Table Topic discussion in San Diego, TrademarkNow will also be exhibiting at the 137th INTA annual meeting - booth number 2137. The TrademarkNow team will be offering live demos of their NameCheck™ and NameWatch™ products. NameCheck, TrademarkNow's trademark search product, provides high-quality, comprehensive search results in a matter of seconds.  NameWatch is an automated trademark watch solution that goes well beyond rote searches and uses powerful algorithms and artificial intelligence to analyze important activity with a company's own trademark portfolio as well as competitors' portfolios and organizes findings in a clear, relevant and prioritized manner.
