TheGrantLawFirm Investigates Premera Blue Cross Data Breach

TheGrantLawFirm, PLLC is investigating whether Premera Blue Cross ("Premera") has violated certain data breach and consumer laws arising from a May 5, 2014 cyberattack and seeks to obtain compensation for affected policyholders. The attack, which impacts over 11 million Premera policyholders, is one of the largest healthcare data breaches to ever occur.

On March 17, 2015, Premera Blue Cross announced that it was the subject of a cyberattack on its IT systems in which personal financial and healthcare information for approximately 11 million policyholders was compromised. The information taken includes names, dates of birth, member IDs, social security numers, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, employment information, bank account information and confidential healthcare information of its policyholders going back as far as 2002. This information could enable hackers to steal policy holders' identification and to illegally obtain medical benefits through the use of policy holder information.

According to press reports, Premera was attacked several weeks after it was specifically warned by federal auditors that its information technology systems were vulnerable to attack. The hackers took information going as far back as 2002. Premera only now is notifying its customers of the breach of this significant information, although it may have been aware of the attack since January 2015.

If you were a Premera Blue Cross policyholder on May 5, 2014, and/or have received a notice from Premera Blue Cross that you were the subject of the attack, contact Lynda J. Grant at [email protected] or call 212-292-4441. Affected policyholders include anyone who had a policy as far back as 2002 until at least May 5, 2014.
