Non-Residential Small Cell Market Triples in 2014 According to Dell'Oro Group

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- According to newly published reports by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, the demand for non-residential small cell infrastructure improved significantly in the second half of 2014, with the total Small Cell market, excluding DAS small cells, improving approximately three-fold in 2014 versus 2013 levels.

"After years of disappointing results, some had started to wonder if small cells would generate material investments before 5G.  We are pleased to see that small cell equipment revenues have more than met our projections for 2014," said Stefan Pongratz, analyst with the Dell'Oro Group. "It is interesting to note that while small cell demand was strong in many of the advanced 4G markets, up-and-coming 4G markets as well as mature HSPA markets also contributed to the strong 2014 sales results," continued Pongratz.

The report shows that the leading macro RAN vendors accounted for large portions of the total Small Cell market, and suggests Huawei was the leading small cell vendor during 2014.  The report aso reflects that non-leading macro vendors such as Samsung and new entrant SpiderCloud accounted for noticeable shares in the outdoor 4G and indoor 3G segments, respectively.

Other highlights from the recently published quarterly market share and 5-year forecast reports include:

  • Non-residential indoor Small Cell market was approximately $100 M in 2014.
  • Non-residential outdoor Small Cell market was approximately $250 M in 2014.
  • 4G accounted for 80% of outdoor small cell revenues while the air interface split was more evenly distributed for indoor small cell revenues.

The Small Cells 5-Year Forecast Report provides a unit and revenue forecast for the following small cell segments: RAN (WCDMA/LTE), Backhaul (LOS/NLOS microwave and fiber/copper), and SP WiFi (enterprise-class devices and outdoor mesh nodes that ship to service providers).  The Quarterly Mobile RAN Report provides vendor share for macro and small cell base stations.
