Former Informatica CTO James Markarian Named Advisor to Big Data Start-up Tamr, Inc.

James Markarian, the former executive vice president and chief technology officer of Informatica Corporation, has joined big-data start-up Tamr, Inc., as an advisor. Markarian will advise Tamr on product architecture and strategy, customer acquisition and West Coast leadership for the company's award-winning data unification platform.

Markarian is delivering a keynote talk, "The Data Unification Imperative," today, January 22 at 1:30 PM PST, at the Big Data Innovation Summit in Las Vegas.

"James is a fantastic addition to our team at Tamr," said Tamr co-founder and CEO Andy Palmer. "He's been a visionary leader i data technologies on the West Coast for more than 15 years. We are thrilled that James has chosen to work closely with us as we grow."

"Tamr has the potential to change the status quo, which today is that all analytics involving diverse data sets have to be science projects," said Markarian. "Tamr has figured out how to integrate and deliver high-quality data directly to the people, analytics and applications that can solve the big, P&L-level business problems - and do this automatically, at scale. I'm really looking forward to being part of this evolution."

Tamr unifies and enriches the vast reserves of valuable data inside and outside an organization, enabling enterprises to use all available data for business intelligence and analytics. Tamr's data unification platform catalogs, connects and curates hundreds or thousands of data sources through a combination of machine learning algorithms and human expert guidance - radically reducing the cost, time and effort of preparing data for analysis.

Markarian is currently an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Khosla Ventures, as well as an investor in StreamSets and an investor in and advisor to EnerAllies and Waterline Data Science. Before joining Informatica, where he served 15 years in senior management, he was an architect at Oracle (News - Alert) Corporation for 10 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and economics and a master's degree in economics from Boston University.

Markarian joins Tamr advisors Frank Moss, former director of the MIT (News - Alert) Media Lab and former CEO and chairman of Tivoli Systems; Dave Girouard, founder and CEO of Upstart Network and former president of Google Enterprise; and Christopher Ahlberg, CEO and co-founder of Recorded Future and founder of Spotfire.
