According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), the principle factor in the prevention of falls is maintaining consistent levels of physical activity to ensure long-term strength and balance.

"People have often assumed falls are a natural side effect of aging, but we now know that most falls are preventable through simple lifestyle changes, such as increased levels of physical activity," said Robert Flippo, MobileHelp CEO. "But knowing how much physical activity is impactful and managing gradual increases to maintain good health is a challenge at any age. We designed this application to help our customers track their exercise on a regular basis, so they can monitor their progress on a daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly basis."

To that end, MobileHelp's Activity Tracking application utilizes the components of its existing M-PERS solution, so customers can take advantage of the new health-focused application without having to invest in extra technology devices or learn how to use new software.

MobileHelp's Activity Tracking application works in tandem with its wearable Fall Button™ automatic fall detection pendant, which consistently tracks the movements of the user. The application uses the data collected by the Fall Button to chart the customer's activity levels on a regular basis - and then alows customers to compare those levels over time. And not only can the customer track their own activity levels, authorized caregivers or family members can check in through MobileHelp Connect® to ensure the user's activity is maintaining consistent levels.

"Activity Tracking combines the benefits of reactant fall detection technology with a proactive activity tracking application, to empower our customers with the critical information they need to help them assess their current levels of physical activity and monitor changes over time," said Chris Otto, VP of Product Development. "Current industry research supports that the visualization of trends related to physical activity can encourage people to achieve their short- and long-term goals to live healthier lives."

Each component of the system was designed to be as user-friendly as possible, requiring little to no additional effort on the part of the customer:

  • Fall Button: A pendant-style lanyard device, the waterproof Fall Button houses the automatic fall detection sensor, which is constantly running to detect the user's movements. In addition to continuously monitoring for a fall emergency, the data accumulated through the sensor also tracks activity levels.
  • MobileHelp Connect: Accessible to all MobileHelp customers and authorized caregivers, MobileHelp Connect can be accessed via the web or via a new app for smartphones and tablets. MobileHelp Connect provides a secure log-in for customers and authorized caregivers to track and manage aspects related to the customer's health. For the Activity Tracking application, MobileHelp Connect presents the data related to activity levels as part of its simplistic user-interface, and allows customers to visualize their activity in a graph format - represented in daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly timespans.
  • Base Station and Mobile Device: Both the cellular base station (for use in the home) and mobile device (for use outside the home) serve as connection points between the Fall Button pendant and MobileHelp Connect, syncing the collected activity data from the Fall Button and relaying it to the MobileHelp Connect online portal for display purposes. This ensures activity data can be consistently collected - whether the customer is at home or on the go.

The combination of the Fall Button, MobileHelp Connect portal, base station and mobile device provides MobileHelp customers with the ability to leverage the benefits of tracking their activity levels - reinforcing the benefits of physical exercise while also giving authorized caregivers the ability to assess the physical health trends of the user over time.
