Global Service Provider Survey 2014: Gigabit Broadband Services Strategies & Vendor Rankings

This survey includes interviews via telephone, in-person and on-line with 88 service providers during September 2014, regarding their plans to offer Gigabit Broadband services. The respondents, from all major regions, across all service provider categories (ILECs, CLECs, Municipalities, Utilities, Wireless Operators, Over-builders, etc.) were either the primary decision maker or have strong influence in the planning and deployment of Gigabit Broadband services.


Participants provided input on a range of areas including timing of deployments for residential, business and Institutions; key drivers; key challenges; Gigabit Broadband technology selection; service offerings (current & future); pre-registration requirements; Gigabit Broadband availability (2014-2018); anticipated Gigabit Broadband take rates (5 year period); and perceived importance of offering Gigabit Broadband.

Gigabit Broadband is required to provide at least 1Gbps in one or both direction.

Key findings of the survey include the following: - More than half of respondents are currently offering Gigabit Broadband Services to businesses and Institutions, while 34 percent are offering to the residential market - Being perceived as a Technology Leader was the overwhelming driver for offer Gigabit - Broadband services and ranked highest in Importance - Cloud-based backup and support for Ultra HD (4KTV) showed the most promise for emerging services over Gigabit Broadband - GPON is the favored technology for residential Gigabit Broadband Deployments; while - P2P Gigabit Ethernet is favored for businesses and Institutions - The #1 challenge for offering Gigabit Broadband Services was unclear customer demand, yet a surprising low percentage of respondents are using pre-registration to determine - build priority - Operators expressed a significant amount of uncertainty in anticipated take rates for - Gigabit Broadband, particularly ILECs - Calix is perceived as the top FTTH Vendor by respondents, followed by Cisco and ADTRAN.
