OpenDNS Deployment Leads to Twenty-Fold Decrease in Malware Infections at Hamamatsu

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

OpenDNS, a leading provider of cloud-delivered security, today announced that it has enabled Hamamatsu, a Japanese manufacturer of optical sensor technologies, to virtually eliminate malware infections across its U.S. operations. Hamamatsu leverages OpenDNS to protect its predominantly mobile workforce across all of the company's North America locations, including its U.S. headquarters in Bridgewater, N.J., and offices in San Jose, Chicago, Denver and San Diego.

"OpenDNS has not only helped us reduce the malware infection rate for systems on our network from 20 percent to less than one percent, but it also provides exceptional visibility into network and user activity, including external attack attempts," said Jim Hnasko, network manager of operations at Hamamatsu. "As a result of deploying OpenDNS, we now know where infections originate and what traffic enters and leaves our network."

Maintaining security for a workforce of mostly mobile users was challenge for Hamamatsu, especially when it came to dealing with malicious activity. Without sufficient network visibility or clear reporting, it was difficult for IT staff to pinpoint which machines were infected by malware. The prevalence of BYOD and roaming devices among employees only added to the complexity of Hamamatsu's environment.

Hamamatsu took advantage of OpenDNS's virtual appliances that connect its internal network and user identities with DNS requests. Hamamatsu was able to quickly and easily deploy virtual appliances to all of the company's U.S. locations, complete with Active Directory integration. The company now has a comprehensive view of the traffic associated with individual users, since all of the company's DNS requests are routed through OpenDNS's cloud-delivered security service. In addition, Hamamatsu installed OpenDNS's roaming client on company laptops to protect them when they leave the network - extending security beyond their perimeter to provide protection anytime, anywhere.

"We now get daily reports that precisely pinpoint any malware infections and help us remediate them immediately. Beyond remediation, OpenDNS also helps prevent infected machines from beaconing out to the Internet in the first place," added Hnasko.

"Protecting mobile and roaming users from attacks once they leave the corporate network is a significant security challenge for any company," said Jeff Samuels, CMO for OpenDNS. "We are focused on providing protection for users wherever they roam, both on and off of the corporate network. We are proud to provide increased protection and enhanced network visibility for Hamamatsu."
