Rovi Teams with Broadcom on Advanced, Cloud-Based Entertainment Discovery and Monetization Capabilities for Set-top Boxes

SANTA CLARA, Calif. & AMSTERDAM --(Business Wire)--

IBC - Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ:ROVI) today announced its collaboration with Broadcom Corporation (News - Alert) (NASDAQ: BRCM) to demonstrate Rovi's new cloud-based guide offering, Rovi Guide (announced yesterday), which runs on Broadcom's BCM7445 Ultra HD system-on-a-chip (SoC) and Nexus-Trellis set-top box software. The demonstration at Rovi's booth at IBC 2014 (Hall 5, Stand A31) marks the first commercially deployable set-top box reference design to showcase Rovi Guide, and highlights the flexibility of the solution.

Rovi Guide is an HTML5-based, multi-platform media programming guide that can deliver rich, advanced entertainment search and discovery capabilities through Rovi's cloud-based technologies and services. Rovi Guide is designed to allow service providers and device manufacturers around the globe to rapidly create and deploy next-generation entertainment discovery and monetization solutions across multiple screens. The demonstration of Rovi Guide is built on Broadcom's flagship BCM7445 Ultra HD video decoder chipset and software platform, delivering powerful, interactive application performance and advanced security features while reducing bandwidth usage by 50 percent.

With Broadcom's complete portfolio of HEVC-enabled devices, operators can substantially reduce the bandwidth required for Ultra HD or traditional HD content transmission over IP, cable or satellite networks, and deliver these services to more locations throughout the home.

"Today's demonstration illustrates the new opportunities made possible when high performance HEVC-enabled silicon is combined with intelligent, web-based user interface desig," said Rich Nelson, Broadcom senior vice president of Marketing, Broadband & Connectivity Group. "Through our close collaboration, Broadcom and Rovi are showcasing to subscribers both radically enhanced search and content for a premium viewing experience through Rovi Guide."

"Rovi Guide running on Broadcom's BCM7445 chipset and software interface showcases the viability of our solution on an industry-leading platform for set-top boxes, and marks a milestone in demonstrating a pathway for the integration of the guide into Broadcom's offerings of this type," said Omar Javaid, senior vice president, Rovi. "We will continue to collaborate with leaders across the ecosystem to highlight the flexibility of Rovi Guide as a platform-agnostic solution that can run on almost any smart TV, next-generation set-top box or mobile device."

Rovi Guide is powered by a differentiated suite of services that can offer advanced search and recommendations, natural-language interaction, extensive entertainment metadata and more, to help define personalized entertainment experiences that promote greater content consumption. Services can also include analytics capabilities designed to allow customers to turn consumption statistics into actionable insights for further refining services and accurately targeting content promotions and advertising.

Rovi plans to host live demonstrations of its complete range of services for media and entertainment businesses, including Rovi Guide, at IBC 2014 (Hall 5, Stand A31). Broadcom is also showcasing a sample electronic programming guide (EPG) application that uses Rovi Cloud APIs in its IBC booth (Hall 2, Stand C25).
