KVH Co. Ltd. Advances New Private Cloud Service With Network Virtualization Technology From Midokura

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/29/14 -- Midokura, a global company focused on network virtualization, today announced that KVH Co. Ltd. of Japan, Asia's leading information delivery platform provider, has selected Midokura's MidoNet network virtualization technology to use for its new private cloud offering, Private Cloud Type-S. Now, KVH has the ability to easily add virtual network services, such as virtual load balancers and virtual firewalls, to its private cloud solutions.

"We are focused on growing and improving our private cloud business so I am very pleased that we are now able to provide our customers with cutting-edge and flexible virtual networking functions to our new Private Cloud Type-S offering via the Midokura MidoNet network virtualization technology," said Yoshiyuki Hayada, Vice President of Technology at KVH. "We look forward to seeing customers enjoying business innovation and cost reductions by leveraging the agile and easy-to-operate virtual networking technology." Cloud computing, especially public clouds, have steadily gained worldwide popularity due to the increased convenience and agility offered to end-users. However, given that different cloud tenants share the same underlying physical resources, it has raised concerns for meeting security and regulatory compliance requirements for keeping an independent, separated infrastructure. Private hosted clouds from KVH can be configured so that all devices, including servers, switches, storage and the computing management software, are dedicated to a client. This new model has garnered increased interest since it provides the convenience of public clouds, while still meeting compliance requirements.

KVH's Private Cloud Type-S offering combines the benefits of private cloud requirements with the convenience of public clouds by providing isolated IT environments which provide security, customization and assured performance. This is achieved while providing cloud benefits such as shared asset management and operation, by the service provider.

With the use of MidoNet, KVH is able to provide virtual networking to its customers that reduces CapEx and the need for buying additional physical network hardware. The new technology is suitable for enterprises who want enterprise-grade functions and quality, but want to start from small deployment without a large up-front investment.

"I am pleased that KVH has selected our network virtualization technology for use in their new private cloud offerings. Most of our use cases are with large-scale public clouds, but this deployment demonstrates that our innovative MidoNet solution is also extremely agile and fully suitable for small to medium size private clouds as well," said Dan Mihai Dumitriu, CEO and Co-founder of Midokura. "One of the unique benefits of our solution is that it contains virtual network services, such as load balancer and firewall. To meet the requirements of customers, especially enterprises, we plan to add more of such network services to our product in the future." Midokura's flagship product, MidoNet, is a software-based, highly distributed network virtualization system that allows enterprises and service providers to build, run and manage virtual networks with increased control and flexibility. Using industry standards and leveraging existing physical infrastructure, MidoNet reduces costs and improves stability, scalability and performance of networks. Specifically for KVH's Private Cloud Type-S, the layer 4 load balancer is deployed as a featured offering in addition to basic network functions such as virtual switches and virtual routers. The MidoNet load balancer is implemented using a distributed architecture, which provides basic load balancing services that scales according to the workload.
