Bioness Vector Gait & Safety System Selected as Finalist for Medical Industry Design Award

VALENCIA, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Bioness Inc. announced today that the Vector Gait and Safety System® has been chosen as a 2014 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) finalist. The Vector Gait and Safety System allows clinician's to aggressively rehabilitate patients in overground gait, balance, and functional activities following neurologic and orthopedic injuries, without the fear of falling. The Vector Gait and Safety System is competing in the rehabilitation and assistive device category, as well as "Best-in-Show" and "Readers' Choice." The MDEA recognizes medical technologies that excel in areas of design and engineering brilliance, manufacturing and technological innovation, clinical efficacy, cost-effectiveness, in addition to overall benefits to patients, end-users, and the healthcare industry.

"Given the range and depth of innovation that is occurring in today's medical device industry, we are extremely proud that for the Vector Gait and Safety System was selected as a finalist for this prestigious industry award," said Todd Cushman, CEO of Bioness, "Our customers at the top rehabilitation hospitals in the United States and Europe have provided tremendous feedback and found the Vector Gait and Safety System to be extremely helpful in increasing the safety and ultimately, the effectiveness, of their patient's rehabilitation."

The Vector Gait and Safety System allows healthcare providers to administer meaningful rehabilitative care sooner and more aggressively while providing a safe environment for both the patient and clinician. The System consists of an overhead robotic trolley, a wireless software interface and conductive rail. During rehabilitation, the patient is connected to the Vector via a harness that is attached to the robot on the ceiling-mounted, zero-footprint rail. The robotic trolley receives commands from the software and automatically tracks patient movement or may be manually operated by a healthcare provider. Parameters such as body weight support and fall protection settings can be easily and seamlessly adjusted by the therapist via the wireless controls and are set based on individual patient needs or requirements for a specific activity - all the data collected during training is then captured for analysis, session comparison and medical record documentation. Vector is designed to provide rehabilitation departments a safe therapeutic experience combined with complete outcomes documentation.

The Vector Gait and Safety System will be competing against five other technologies in the Rehabilitation and Assistive-Technology Products category and against all 53 other finalists for "Best-in-Show" and "Readers' Choice." The Bronze, Silver, and Gold winners will be announced on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the Medical Device & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference in New York City.
