As 3G & 4G technology became more commonplace, the logical progression was to use this technology in place of hardwired connections, especially in areas where getting traditional DSL or Cable Modem service was not feasible. For simple uses, like remote control of HVAC equipment, or monitoring of environmental sensors, wireless broadband could cost-effectively take the place of hardwired Internet connections.
Video surveillance, however, has proven to be an application that stressed the limits of 3G/4G technology. Even a simple low-resolution camera can stream gigabytes of video DAILY, this overruns the typical 5GB monthly account cap on a wireless broadband setup if you try to do remote recording, or continuous viewing of the camera in any way.
This problem can seemingly be solved by adding a small NVR alongside the camera. There are many simple NVR's on the market today that can be deployed alongside a camera and 4G router to add local storage. However, local storage alone does not fully solve the problem. Many times cameras on 4G connections are deployed in remote locations, or municipal areas that are prone to high crime. If simple evidence recording were effective, the 4G connection could be eliminated entirely, and the customer would simply retrieve video from the NVR after something happened. The customer wants to be able to see their cameras, retrieve video, and know what is happening at the location.
Video analytics, combined with local storage, makes a strong play in this scenario. By recording video on-site, and providing the customer with the ability to be alerted when there is human activity at the site, they can utilize a mobile broadband powered camera system effectively, without the same risk of costly monthly data overages.
The Rialto from VideoIQ is engineered for this purpose, and solves multiple problems in a single unit. Government, municipal and law enforcement users in particular are finding that previously uncapped or generously-sized monthly bandwidth allotments are becoming more expensive or less available. As 4G has gone from an exclusive technology available on a limited number of device to being a staple of every smartphone on the street, the network has gotten more congested. Carriers are forced to manage these networks more closely. These customers are looking for solutions that let them keep their existing cameras and mobile broadband accounts, but use them in a more practical and cost-effective way.
