SpaceCraft Scales Web Publishing Platform for Small Businesses on Cloudant DBaaS
BOSTON, Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Cloudant, provider of a globally distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS), today announced that SpaceCraft is running its content management system (CMS) platform for small businesses on Cloudant. SpaceCraft has experienced significant market demand in the past year and recently moved to Cloudant to help the company grow without having to bring on more technical staff to manage database operations. As a result, SpaceCraft has been able expand the software development team working on its core product and focus on building new business partnerships.
Hundreds of websites are published on SpaceCraft every week. SpaceCraft helps customers create and manage beautiful, effective websites that work across all devices -- mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and TVs. The fully hosted platform enables small business customers to design websites with no coding required. Sites have great SEO out of the box and can easily connect to a wide variety of third-party services, such as Twitter, Facebook, Wufoo, Disqus, and Google Analytics. SpaceCraft runs Cloudant on dedicated servers on Rackspace® hosted infrastructure as part of the Cloudant Accelerator Program, which is designed to give startups access to dedicated server infrastructure at a reduced rate for an introductory period.
"We have rapid release cycles, and on average, it takes less than two weeks for a new SpaceCraft feature to be designed, developed, tested, and deployed," said David Wood, CTO of SpaceCraft. "Based on the partnership deals we're signing, we're supporting larger volumes of traffic, and making adjustments to our platform to support this growth. At the core of all our planning is the need for a scalable database, which is why we chose to migrate to Cloudant."
SpaceCraft's Web publishing platform features five distinct application tiers that let the company fine-tune performance for specific customer workloads. All services rely on Cloudant on the back end and can be scaled independently of each other. The platform uses Redis as a caching layer to further increase scalability and customer website performance.
"Content management systems are a natural fit for JSON document stores, and SpaceCraft's back-end architecture doesn't stop there," said Alan Hoffman, co-founder and chief product officer at Cloudant. "They've created a Web publishing platform that can easily reuse and reformat content to look its best, and efficiently scale as traffic patterns expand and contract for specific read/write paths on the SpaceCraft CMS platform. They already use our Apache Lucene-based Cloudant Search, and we're looking forward to having them join the beta program for our upcoming geospatial indexing capabilities."
SpaceCraft originally launched in April 2012, managing its own database. The company's growth led it to move to Cloudant in early 2013, and it has been running in production with Cloudant ever since. Currently, the company has more than 5,000 databases.
