At the Defcon hacker conference in Las Vegas, two hackers proved that it is possible to put together a set that can read and then manipulate cars' firmware for just 20 dollars. The protection installed by the manufacturer was circumvented in a matter of seconds, after which almost all of the car's capabilities could be manipulated - brakes, steering, and even the air conditioning and airbag. It is also conceivable that this manipulation could be done via Wi-Fi and a smartphone.
